Re: Why does my Engine sound like a diesal?

using lots of oil? you using high octane fuel? smell gasoline?

is it valve train rattle? a sort of fluttering clicking sound when you press on the gas.
or block knock?..imagine the sound of hitting the valve cover with a hammer coming from inside the motor.
check engine light on? if egr unit screwed up it could cause valve train rattle.

could be a number of things. without hearing it or some description of the noise it's hard to tell.

many here know a whole lot about the electronics in these cars. i'm an old school motor guy. i'm learning myself. so i don't wanna tell ya your motor is shot. it may or may not be.
once upon a time i had a buick with piston slap. my friends would say 'i didn't know century's came with diesel motors.' i drove it daily for another 2 years. it didn't use any oil and ran just fine. nowadays i have a 91 si that sounds like diesel and uses a quart of oil each tank full. it smells like gasoline inside the car for the first 10 minutes or so until the oil pressure builds. it runs fine but i'm gonna attempt to rebuild the low end of the motor since the guy i bought it from did the top end.

you've certainly come to the right place for friendly honest advice or knowledge.

I'm just making a guess but wouldn't valve chatter sound like a diesel ?

Re: Why does my Engine sound like a diesal?

Yes, it seem that you need a valve clearance check. Mine got quieter after I've done it. Those H seem to be loud on valve train. And btw change your oil...

Re: Why does my Engine sound like a diesal?

i'm thinking piston or bearing if he's refering to the diesel knock and valve train if he's speaking of diesel sound when accearating.

Re: Why does my Engine sound like a diesal?

It sounds like a rattley diesaly sound, when cold and accelerating. When car warms up, its still noticeable but isnt as prominant... on idle you have to stick your head out the window to hear it but when accelerating from gears 1&2 its present there too. Sound goes quiter as gears up higher. ill post a video up soon. when my net speeds up!

Re: Why does my Engine sound like a diesal?

Check out my thread. I have the same noise your describing. I think I've narrowed it down to cylinder 4 causing the noise.
