System too lean, now system too rich

ok. so when i got my lude, it had an egr code, as well as a system too lean code. there has also always been a hesitation when i am driving along at a constant speed, then push the gas (it will then bog down for a second). i cleared the code and the egr one stayed away (without cleaning) but system too lean stayed.

so i cleaned the egr valve
cleaned the egr ports
ran seafoam thru vacuum lines
ran seafoam thru the intake
ran seafoam thru the gas
ran seafoam thru the oil
replaced plugs with NGK iridium plugs
replaced PCV valve
cleaned out IACV
and finally unhooked the battery for 15 minutes to reset ECU

and after all that, i am no longer getting a "fuel system too lean (bank 1)" code. however, i am now getting a "fuel system too rich (bank 1)" and sometimes when i get out of my car i can smell gas.

so what the heck. what am i missing? i do have the bouncing idle problem, just havent been motivated to get to the FITV (i think thats what it is).

thanks for any help. im more concerned with the hesitation, or bogging down when im driving along than anything else. i've had no leaks, change oil every 3k miles with mobil 1 full synthetic and mobil 1 filter and do all the maintanance i can think of. just want my ride to be smooth.

ok. so i think the hesitation may be the fuel pressure regulator. i am going to pick one up on the way home. that just takes 5 minutes to change.

Re: System too lean, now system too rich

i havent done a compression test on it, but the hesitation isn't constant, it will completely go away for a day or 2 then come back for a day, then even go away for a week at times.

and the engine isn't burning any oil. i check it at least once a week.

Re: System too lean, now system too rich

it will run rich until your computer goes back through and goes through all of it's system checks...take it for a nice drive on the highway and cruise at 55 or 65 for a few miles. no braking. then if the code don't pop up after about a half hour it should be fine.

cool. i'm an old school car guy. i realize these modern cars have gadgets galore and your issue is probably like hunter said. my instinct is to start with the mechanical stuff and when you said you smelled gas some old ghosts stirred in me.

you've got a vtec that don't lose or use oil? awsome!!!

i know! i've heard so much about these losing oil, but the only time i was losing oil was when my drain plug wasn't tight enough (they replaced it with some BS rubber expansion plug and i can't get it out) but when it's tight enough i lose no oil. been through 2 oil changes so far

Re: System too lean, now system too rich

Kinda off topic but make sure to do an oil and oil filter change soon since you put all that seafoam in your car.

Re: System too lean, now system too rich

What seafoam does is clean all the junk out of your engine and it all goes into your oil. No point of doing a seafoam if the gunk is just going to be going in and out of your engine still.
