Which kind of clear coat?

So Im gonna finally try and DIY clear coat my Carbon fiber hood. It's been faded forever and Im finally tired of it looking like crap. I've tried wet sanding and buffing but the white haze comes back in a day or two.
But I have 2 questions that I can't find online.

1st- How many cans would I need? I see people using 3-4 cans but their all civic hoods which are smaller then ours. I don't wanna have too little but I don't want to have 3 or so cans left.

2nd- What kind of clear? Normal clear or engine enamel clear? Since the hood gets pretty hot would I need engine enamel to withstand the heat? I just see people using normal clear but never saw this question come up to be answered. Also note this is rattle can clear Im going to use, the hood is too crappy to spend 100+ bucks to get done by a shop. The actual fibers are cracked in the middle and the hood pins are torn up where it's bolted to.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

Honestly, clearing it may make it worse. Where the gel coat is cracking, the lacquer will just accentuate it. I tried it on mine, yes it is glossy, but the cracks look worse. I am wrapping it this week (hopefully), and we'll see how it turns out.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

Well the cracks are deep in the weave and can't be felt on the outside. The surface is smooth and not rough. Though Im not worried about the cracks I just want it to be glossy rather then faded white and blotchy. It looks like a mismatched hood you see on crappy rust bucket cars rather then a CF hood lol.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

when i bought my car the cf hood was all faded and had like a smokey look to it. i used rubbing compound and buffed it with a wool buffing wheel and a drill, then put 2 coats of wax on with a foam buffing wheel and it looks great.

i tried a bunch of ways to use the rubbing compound but the easiest way i found was using a high powered plug in drill and buffing until it was shiny. just putting a line of it on the cf hood, and spreading it around in a smooth coat on the hood, then going over the whole thing (not waiting for it to dry then buffing it off) until it shined. i went in sections, doing it in quarters.

i have seen something on youtube about clear coating it, but the rubbing compound worked very well for me, and is easier than clear coating.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

Yeah I did 400 grit-1,500 grit wet sanding and buffing with rubbing compound and finishing off with some polishing compound and 4 layers of wax. 3 days and it was fading in patches again and in 1 week the entire thing was faded again. Tried it 2 more times with different waxes polishing and rubbing compounds and did the same thing.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

400 grit is way to rough to use for a rub out. Even though you went to 1500 you already took the clear off. The most you can do on clear is 1000 (lightly) then work to 1500 then 2000.

If you want to respray it sand it with 800 then you could spray bomb it or have a shop clear it for you. I don't know how many cans it would take with a spray bomb. You could've just been able to rub it out as it was when it was faded unless the clear was already pealing off.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

Wetsand 1500 grit (gently) and dry. Use a halogen spotlight to see any imperfections. There is a mix to use with a gravity feed painter and an air compressor, and you mix in activator but that's professional. DIY??? Get duplicolor wheel paint clear coat. You will need the paint can triggers, for even spray and control.

If you feel brave, You can save 250.00 worth of bodyshop work. If not, don't. The cracks will come back to haunt you. Why didn't you clear coat it off the bat?

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

using rattle can will be the worst thing to use, cause it'll look like **** since it's not spraying strong enough. You'll need to use actual clear coat that's used for cars and use an actual paint gun. I've cleared several CF hoods and trunks including my own, and it holds up perfectly fine and will look fresh again. What I do is wet sand with 500-600 grit, wipe it down with wax and grease remover, then spray a few coats of clear. Start off with a light coat, then go heavier for the next few coats

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

^^ dis guy knows his doo doo ^^

And I've pained a couple a things via rattle can. Yes you can, but knowing a compressor/gun results are 1000x better, just do it right the first time.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

I bought the car with the Hood already faded and crappy. They never cleared it. I know real clear coat will look better but I don't want to throw 100+ bucks on something that's not worth it. How does the rattle can clear look bad? Does it not look smooth or shiney?

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

If I had a Hood without all these deep cracks and destroyed Hood pins I'd do it the right way and get it professionally done. But doing that to this Hood would be like spending 800+ in nice rims and tires on a car that has no engine. Lol.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

HVLP gun will give a nice smooth finish with no extra work. rattle can needs a light wetsand and buff, to take out orange peel and make it shiny.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

I think I might just buy 5 cans may sound like overkill but I could always use it on other parts I paint. I have nothing to loose so Im just going to rattle can it with rim clear coat.

Re: Which kind of clear coat?

I wrapped my hood on Wednesday night, and this is how it turned out. In the first picture (CF1), you can see where I attempted to wet-sand and buff the sides (where it is white). On the front of the hood is where I tested the clear-coat. As you can see, it didn't work out so well either...

The other 2 pictures (CF2 and CF3) are the finished product. I will take some pictures when I put it back on the car (hopefully this weekend).
