Engine Smoke, Tranny Failure, rebuild or scrap?

for starters. 99' Base Model, Automatic. 201k original parts.
>Internal Issues
-There's an oil leak, that i believe is coming from whatever piece my oil filter connects to, thats getting progressively worse as the days go on. Its dripping onto my manifold, oil pan, and tranny box. and everything in between. its messy. Its a minor leak, but occasionally it'll leak large quantities. Its causing smoke to arise from in between the head and the fuel injector, and its definately noticable when you open the hood after a drive.
-The brakes practically dont work, the rotors chirp when i drive and screech when i slowly take turns or am reversing.
-The transmission was fine when i bought it at 197k but, i swapped the fluid because it was rather dark. I made the mistake of using a generic compatible trans fluid however, i switched it yesterday with Honda Genuine fluid. It's been slipping between 2nd and 3rd pretty hard, but i havent noticed it too much since i changed it. But its only been a day..
-The head is starting to leak towards the back, its not serious, but its not getting better.
-The ABS light is on, for a damaged or broken left rear sensor.(have no idea what to do about that)
-The e-brake light comes on sometimes when i use the brakes. I regularly maintain my fluids. i suspect maybe a loose wire? or something.
>External Issues
-The car could use a clear coat, its midnight blue but in the sun its hardly visible.
-The lights are rather oxidized and everything ive tried hasnt polished them too well.
-Each window has a different shade of tint on it, with the acception of the driver side window, which has no tint.
-The trunk has drill holes and leaks a little bit.
I love this car, yet i can't decide whether fixing it up is the best choice. I know im looking at alot of money in repairs. Which isnt out of the question. I make decent money, but it will take me quite some time to aquire everything i need. I keep hitting dead ends, any help guys?

Re: Engine Smoke, Tranny Failure, rebuild or scrap?

if you are handy with cars go for it. sounds like by the time you are done you will have invested a lot of time and $. if your desire is to have an instant hot rod this aint the car for you obviously. however if your desire is to take on a project bumper to bumper that will slowly progress but in the end will satisfy your urge to rebuild a car and drive it here and there as you go, this car is the one for you.
if your thinking of selling it for a profit, aint gonna happen once you get started. $200 here, $500 there will over time lead to a big investment. 5th gen preludes don't resell all that high like.

i bought a 97 sh that was well used but overall in decent shape for a 15 year old car. i figured to get it ready for the local Christmas parade would take half a decade and 10 grand. i bought it knowing this and after a month of studying the car confirmed it's a big project. but driving it a couple times a month keeps me motivated to pursue it.

if it's your daily driver, sell it or trade for a more depedible ride.

Re: Engine Smoke, Tranny Failure, rebuild or scrap?

I'll tell you what everyone is going to tell you, either 5 speed swap it or sell it and buy a 5 speed. Tranny problems gone.

The oil filter could just be the O ring, extremely cheap and easy fix.

Check your brake pads, they might need to be replaced. If your rotors are beyond their resurfacing ability or warped, you will need new ones. They could be fine however.

If the head is leaking oil it's most likely the gasket. Those are not terribly expensive and you can save a lot of money doing the job yourself.

If you know it's a broken sensor that's causing the abs light, get a new one... Check connections as well

The e-brake light is a common problem on 5th gens. Search it up, there are many threads covering this topic.

These are much more important than all of the aesthetic problems you are having. Worry about it's health now, and appearance later.

If this sounds like too much, sell it and buy a 5 speed. Glad I could help.

Re: Engine Smoke, Tranny Failure, rebuild or scrap?

upon buying the car, i had planned to make a 5spd swap. i hadnt expected for all of these problems to arise.
today i found out i havea faulty or damaged EGR valve. so i'll just add that to the list.
say i put a 5spd and replace the engine. what am i looking at in $$$, i have a fair amount of wiggle room with money. but i know labor will destroy my wallet. im rather tech savvy, but cars have only recently become a hobby of mine.
+ im not equipped with the right tools to acomplish such tasks.
