Icon5 Low grinding noise...

Over the weekend I bought a 2000 VTEC Prelude with the autostick tranny and 126k on it from a wholesale dealer. It had a 60 point inspection and they did the standard oil change/tire rotation and also replaced the rear brakes. The fronts are at 55%. This car is physically nearly flawless, it has clearly been loved by someone, though it comes with no records. My mechanic looked at it briefly today and road tested it and he likes it, too. However...

I have noticed that when the car is cold it will make a very low grinding noise, so low that it is less a noise than it is more of a very subtle vibration when it first starts to move. It does not seem to do this in reverse, even if I go into reverse before going into first (like if I am backing out of a spot). After three or four seconds it goes away and the car drives normally. It feels/sounds a little like it does when you have not fully disengaged the emergency brake, but I know I have since the light indicating brake has gone out (I live in CA and always engage the parking brake when I park). On the other hand, this morning (the first morning I had it) when I disengaged the emergency brake the light did not go off for a few minutes, though it did by itself after that point (I assure you, it was as fully disengaged as it could have been!). I will be returning to the mechanic and the next time I have a chance to park it flat I will do so without the brake but I was interested to see if anyone had any ideas? On my last car I had to replace the transmission 500 miles after I bought it, so I am a little wary...

Thanks,

Lark

My mechanic's best guess on the noise is that it needs a transmission service--he said the transmission fluid smelled a little burned, and since we don't have any service records for this car I don't know when it was last done...

Well, the mechanic has the car now and he is going to do the transmission service and the brake service (system flush--the fluid level was fine, but it can't hurt) and we'll see if that fixes the problems.

It's not the brakes, I had all of mine replaced and the rotors in the front, too. His best guess is that it's my shocks, but eeeegh. I dunno. Only way to tell is to replace them and see if it helps :P

Yeah a new filter and fluid can't hurt. I don't have the auto (stick) I would do it like every 25,000(filter and fluid change) or so just to be on the safe side. I know earlier model automatic Hondas had vibration when in drive sitting at a light or something. Nature of the beast they always said.

It is the ABS system turning on. It is normal for 5th gens to "grind" for about 2-3 seconds when you first start moving in 1st gear. I was freaked out too when I first got mine so I took it to the dealership. They said it is supposed to do that.

100% correct. The ABS system does a self check when you first start moving...if the check is OK...everthing is fine...if the check fails your ABS light would then come on.

When I worked at jiffy lube we always made people sign a waver if there trannies had over 100grand on them if they wanted to change the filter also. the reason we did this was some times if you change the filter on an old tranny it may have derbies that will break lose from the better flow of the new filter. Doing that may cause clogs and tranny screw ups

What you're feeling is the self diagnostics on the ABS system and it is normal. The ABS system is programmed to perform a self diagnostic within 1 - 2 seconds of the vehicle beginning to move, in either direction. This activity involves cycling of the ABS main valve, which can cause a slight vibration to be felt throughout the vehicle as the valve is connected to all 4 brake calipers via the brakelines which are snaked throughout the chassis. The valve cycling is a line pressure check. The vibration that results is amplified by a number of factors, including: 1) age of the vehicle and condition of the braking system (including fluid); (2) climatic conditions such as outside temperature - it may be more pronounced in cold weather; (3) direction of initial travel and rate of initial acceleration - a quick departure in the foreward direction may cause the vibration to be felt less, as more mechanical activity is occuring than in, say, a slow roll backwards such as in reversal out of a sloped driveway, and the more mechanical activity there is, the more the potential for masking of the vibration even to a point that it may not be felt at all.
Nonetheless, if the sensation changes without a correlating change in circumstance you should have the vehicle inspected by a professional.
