Huge Problem with Transmission (manual)

So I recently purchased a 97 Honda Prelude Base about 2 months ago and I've run into a HUGE problem with my transmission.

First off, the clutch was replaced before i bought it. Also, I replaced the transmission fluid over the weekend and it didn't help at all. When I first got the car, it didnt have any rattles, hesitation, etc.

Alright, so whenever I go to shift gears, there is a bad rattle from the transmission. 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, etc. As soon as I push in the clutch and move the shifter, rattle. If I'm slowing down (even foot off the gas) and I'm in gear, rattle.

So I put up with the rattle for 2 weeks, until this weekend when my car crapped out on me. Any gear that I'm in will go to 3k rpm and no more. At 3k rpm I'll shift and while in 4th gear, the car wont go past 45mph.

When I went to the autostore asking for manual transmission fluid, I told them the problem and they said it might be my synchronizers going bad. Could it be those?

I've never heard of synchros going/gone bad preventing you from going over 45 mphs.... Sounds like this problem goes a lot deeper than the transmission.

Hmmm, thats not good...

From listening to the engine, it sounds normal. While driving, it seems that it wants to keep going, but the transmission is preventing it. There's no CEL, knocking, weird noises, etc.

I'll try and post a video here soon.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the tranny?

Yea, I'm 95% sure its coming from the tranny. If I'm coasting down the road with the car in neutral, no rattle what-so-ever. When its in gear and I take my foot off the gas, rattle.

Well the 3K rev limit means your motor is in limp mode.

Re: Huge Problem with Transmission (manual)

Okay, so I took the car to a mechanic and they said the catalytic converter was clogged. I guess that would make sense for the rattle, but what about not going over 3k rpm?

And the car passed emissions about a month ago.

Re: Huge Problem with Transmission (manual)

Hahaha, that's why I asked if it was the tranny.

I remember reading about it being the cat clogged up.
The 3k limit is limp mode.

here is a thread I found for you..doing some light reading
Car running in limp mode

Maybe the distributor???
