Bump - Loud scrape from area under engine

2001, stock height.

I was going turtle slow over a bump I thought I would be ok with (I got the car a month ago), but heard something on the bottom scrape - approximately from the bottom of car under engine. I looked under the front and saw the large bucket or dome thing (extreme auto newb here) scraped a bit.

What is this thing? Is it ok that scraped it (quite loud actually). And I would describe the sound as more of a bang than a scrape

Nothing from the back end made any scraping/banging noise when it went over

Sounds like your oil pan by the way you're describing it.

Re: Bump - Loud scrape from area under engine

Mine will look different from yours due to the aftermarket traction bar (bar with the writing on it) and the larger downpipe - but was it by chance the object to the far right in this image? If so, that would be your oil pan. Try to be a little more cautious, you really don't want to damage that.

Re: Bump - Loud scrape from area under engine

A picture will help. But does sound like your oil pan, but how did you manage to scrape that at stock height? Was the bump that bad?

Yeah it looks like the oil pan you pointed out in the picture.

I'm actually quite nervous about it. I might take the car to my guy to have him make sure it is not damaged. Or make sure the oil pan isn't hanging low - is that possible?

Re: Bump - Loud scrape from area under engine

Just make sure it's not cracked/dented or leaking.

Re: Bump - Loud scrape from area under engine

Most likely just scraped. You'd know if it wasn't okay you'd have oil all over the ground a dead engine lol. I don't think it's possible for the oil pan to "hang low" just be careful.

Re: Bump - Loud scrape from area under engine

Unless for some reason the previous owner put a larger oil pan on....but the chances of that are >0.0000005%

Re: Bump - Loud scrape from area under engine

It was probably just a high bump. Preludes are still kind of low from factory. Just be careful and as long as it's not leaking any fluids you should be ok.
