Ok, so I have a gorgeous 5th gen that I love. The thing is, I am about to change the motor in it for an H23A DOHC Vtec, but am unsure if it's even worth it...

Here's the deal, the body has almost no rust on it (other than the bottom of the doors and rear quarter pannels), but the chassis is covered in it, as the car was used in summer as much as winter. In my opinion, it still seems good, as the rust is covering it, but seems quite shallow, but my mom was thinking the motor might be a waste of money as the chassis is in this condition. keep in mind that it has 237 000 km's, and that I live in quebec, so the winters seem to do this to all cars. The question is; if I do buy the motor, will I have to invest into the chassis in the next few years? Pics of the chassis to come, but in the mean time I have a few of the car and motor :)

Re: how much rust is TOO much rust?

What I'd always make sure is under your car to see the rust spots as well as where your struts are located. Those are what I generally look at when lets say I purchase a used vehicle. Any of that and it's an automatic no. Even for me, I'm picky. If there's rust under the door, it's a no for me.

Have you replaced your struts yet at all? I live in Ottawa which is a 15 minute drive to Gatineau, Quebec and those roads SUCK. I wouldn't be surprised if your struts blew already.

My thoughts exactly. Lucky for me, my rust isn't in any structural locations.

I wonder if you Plasti Dip the inside of the fenders, if that would help prevent rust? Probably...

Chassis saver (brush on material) the rust spots you can't see to prevent them getting worse

Re: how much rust is TOO much rust?

Here's what I've seen so far. You can get an autobody guy to fix rust for you in two ways, fill the rust holes with moisture resistant body filler or cut out the part/replace it. Now quarter panels are a bitch because they are part of the roof so you can only buy them cut. Buying a new quarter panel and getting it installed/painted would cost more than just filling the rust, but if you take care of the rust-less quarter than it will cost you a lot less in the long run.

Re: how much rust is TOO much rust?

any rust is to much lol, its deff worth it, i would seriously recommend wire brushing off all the rust and sanding it, then using a chem rust remover, clean it up nice and good then lay down a few coats of por15 then a few heavy coats of truck bed liner from rustoleum, will protect it from rust even in the harsh'est of places. good luck :)

EDIT: if your going to have the motor out doing a swap i would definitely clean all that up por15 it then bedline it then lay down a coat or two of whatever color you want, nip it in the ass before it starts turning into swiss cheese!

Re: how much rust is TOO much rust?

everything under your hood that is rusty i had rust on too. clean it off with a wire wheel and paint it whatever color you want. takes maybe an hour from start to finish.

Re: how much rust is TOO much rust?

I agree rust is just bad in general. And I see your car is a automatic. Best to just buy a 5spd prelude rust free and drop the motor in.

Re: how much rust is TOO much rust?

Can't fill rust spots. They'll come back. Gotta cut them out and replace with metal, not necessarily gotta buy a whole quarter panel, but fab a piece of metal to cover what you need and weld it in.

Trust me, I'm in the business. I've filled customers cars with "moisture resistant filler" telling them it will come back, but "they don't care". And sure enough it does a month down the road and they want it patched with metal.
