Ran into deep **** Need price checks

Well I bought the car cheap so it should have been expected :/

Here is the list of things that need changing according to my mechanic.

-Head Gasket is blown
-Major oil leak under timing cover, needs timing belt and water pump package
-Rear main crank seal is leaking, or oil pan gasket
-Needs a valve adjustment
-Left axle, inner cv boot torn
-Steering feels tight, may need a new power steering pump, P/S Fluid Pressure needs to be checked
-Front motor mount is broken
-Needs new negative battery terminal

How much you guys think it will run me?

I've seen write ups for the head gasket but I don't have the tools for it.

Re: Ran into deep **** Need price checks

1998 prelude sh

It came out to 2093 dollars. What I hate tho is, the head gasket repair for parts is 180, the labor is 800? Everything else is reasonable.

Labor 1,311.50
Parts 678.84

that labor is just the head gasket....

If I change the gasket myself, is it difficult to change the timing belt as well?

Re: Ran into deep **** Need price checks

If you decide on doing this yourself, do a bunch of research and pay attention to what you are doing. Last thing you want is to get it back together and the timing belt be slightly off and your car not start, or run like sh!t

Weird stuff, I checked the coolant a couple days ago and it was topped off. Now its not and it has brown crap in it? Was I supposed to feel something when it blew?

Re: Ran into deep **** Need price checks

Experience and time cost money. If you look at the PDF for your car, you can see specifically which tools you need and how to repair your car. If this is your only means of transportation, just get the car repaired. The more the oil and coolant mix, the worse. The mechanic has to do the timing after removing the head, so the belt, and gaskets really that kind of money?

So out of touch with labor rates, last time I checked, 105/hr?

I live in vegas. I didn't think head gasket labor was that much tho. The parts only cost 100 and the labor is 900? Seemed kind of weird to me but I wouldn't know haha.

Here is the list of things that need changing according to my mechanic.

-Head Gasket is blown $80
-Major oil leak under timing cover, needs timing belt and water pump package $300
-Rear main crank seal is leaking, or oil pan gasket $25 for the rear main, $30 for oil pan gasket
-Needs a valve adjustment $5 for a feeler gauge
-Left axle, inner cv boot torn $50 for a cv axle
-Steering feels tight, may need a new power steering pump, P/S Fluid Pressure needs to be checked I dunno
-Front motor mount is broken $40, everybody's breaks
-Needs new negative battery terminal $3

How much you guys think it will run me?
Highlighted red is the cost for parts only. Your mechanic will probably go by the book on how many hours of labor to charge you, and I know the timing belt job alone is like $400 in labor. Sooo..I hope you know how to do stuff on your own.

Check Hondaautomotiveparts.com for prices on parts if you think you can order them through there and get a better price than your mechanic or local retailer.

Re: Ran into deep **** Need price checks

im gonna be doing the head gasket on a vw beetle... never touched a german car before.... but instead of like you said, a $1000 job, head gaskets only cost around $50, then you just need the tools and patience and make sure you take pictures, and label everything!

buying a JDM or used motor, I'd do a waterpump/ timing belt anyway, possibly the headgasket. you don't know where the motor came from and most importers don't offer much of a, if any, warranty. They always pull the "must be installed by a professional shop/ mechanic" card to avoid liability.

do your homework, buy the tools you need, and do the work yourself. You'll save money and own the tools.
stop driving the car before you destroy the motor. coolant/ water in your motor will cause catastrophic damage.

you have to get your head machined anyway

+ all new seals/gaskets everywhere

AND it would be good to new other things as well: spark plugs & wires, distributor cap & rotor, check your clutch's condition, check brake pads & rotors, all fluids and so on...
(you can expect that the previous owner didnt do any maintenance to that car)

well I barely got diagnosed with a blown head gasket, but I don't know how long I've had it. I've been driving it around town for around 2 months since I purchased it. I will probably do it myself, but I have to get to school and back. The guys at the shop told me I can drive it for short distances but not long trips.

Well that right there shows you shouldnt listen to them.

When you have a blown headgasket, it allows your engine coolant and engine oil to mix. So you have two problems: 1) your oil no longer can properly lubricate the engine and 2) your coolant can no longer properly cool the engine.

No cooling of the engine combined with no lubrication ends with a completely blown engine which costs a minimum of $1,000 parts alone. $2,000+ to have it reliable.
