Hesitation Issues...Again Help!

Hi guys, It's been a while since I was here, hope all is good, anyway...
97 Prelude Base
172,000 miles
Hesitates and exhaust pops at times. Mostly when starting engine and going, the car would hesitate and bogs down, but does not cut off. When I step on the gas a little bit, the exhaust sometimes pops. After a few seconds the car will be fine and run normal.
No engine codes by the way, other than insufficient EGR flow that has been taken care of.
It is just irritating, as I had this problem for at least a year already.
Here is a list of things that I have done so far
1) Change fuel filter
2) Change spark plugs (NGK gapped - I used to have bosch platinum 4's)
3) Changed spark plug wires (NGK - used to be duralast)
4) Changed Cap
5) Changed Rotor
6) Cleaned out EGR Valve/Changed Gasket
7) Drilled holes in intake manifold to clean out EGR ports (followed the how to)
AND FINALLY....
8) Seafoam in gas tank, booster, and engine oil
9) Changed whole distributor....

After all this, the car gladly hesitated when I took it for a test run 10 minutes ago. Of course, I did not do all these things at once, just the distributor about an hour ago; but all were done within the past 8 months.

Not entirely sure what else the problem could be. The only thing I can think of is either the TIMING of the engine, or CATALYTIC converter - though I don't have any engine trouble codes.

If anyone has input, or any similar problems, please let me know. I'm somewhat going crazy.....

No odd odors or smoke from the exhaust? You still have a catalytic converter?

Re: Hesitation Issues...Again Help!

My opinion...
First I would check distributor is correct. check connections fastened down properly etc etc. next would be wires, but as you said there new. You should make sure anyway..

But in the end I think its your timing...Had the same problem its out a tooth maybe 2.
Have you had the timing belt replaced or worked on within the year? waterpump etc etc
Mine hesitated and bogged but did not die..I also had a loss of power, no acceleration.

Hope that helps man
Ryan

Re: Hesitation Issues...Again Help!

I forgot to mention, I also replaced the ignitor along with the distributor.
Wires are snug, distributor on correctly.
Timing belt was changed at 118k, so roughly 60k miles since then. Never changed water pump - only thermostat and radiator a few years ago
Cat is still there, though I do need to take it to a muffler shop since I hear something rattling while on idle - guessing its my exhaust mount
I'll get somebody to check the timing for me, then will let you guys know what I find.
Thanks

No problem man,

My waterpump seized and pushed the timing belt off..garaged so called fixed it.
had another garage look at it and it was out by 2..
This was after I spent money on new cap rotor wires all that.

I'm 97.3 percent sure its your timing..I had the same problem with bogging down.

Re: Hesitation Issues...Again Help!

AEM intake is on the car, replaced the filter a couple months ago.
I'll see if I can get a friend to check my timing sometime next week, hopefully that will be my culprit.
How much should I expect to pay when adjusting timing?
Thanks

Never changed the 02 sensors yet. Shouldn't I get a engine code for that though? Also was thinking knock sensor, but still no codes popping up. My car does have 172k, maybe it is time for some new 02 sensors

Re: Hesitation Issues...Again Help!

mine didnt throw a code till i stalled my car on accident the one day, cleared the code and it didnt come back so no it may not throw a code. try doing just bank one first. best place to get them is from sparkplugs.com
edit** you can also try soaking your current sensors in some seafoam to clean them, i have been told this will work, but have never tried it so I'm not sure
