Icon5 I really hate to ask this, but..

I really hate to ask this, coz I'm pretty sure I know the answer, already.. BUT..

As much as I love my father, he has this habit of saying things like "OH, don't do that, or x will happen and it will be a pain to deal with."

So, I mentioned that I was going to install the fogs on the 'lude, and I was stoked coz I finally got the radio code. He asks what the radio code is and I tell him. He's like, "You don't want to disconnect the battery.. your check engine light will come on like it did on our CRV, and it'll cost $50-80 bucks to have it reset and fixed."

Welcome to my life.

So.. anyway.. I'm pretty sure nothing like that is going to happen. But has anyone had something like that happen??? Just curious.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

I don't have to worry about the radio code, since I have an aftermarket one installed. With that being said. There isn't anything to really worry about installing fogs on the Prelude. It's pretty much close to plug and play. There is two nice guides on this site on how to install them and it's pretty straight forward.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

Too late.. already disconnected the battery. :) But now there is an unrelated issue.

I have been using one set of instructions for installing the foglights, but they don't quite match up with the fogs I purchased from k2motor (LF-PL97AM-RS). There is no orange wire in the harness, and the one wire that is left has a plug on it that doesn't match the plug on the orange wire in the Prelude, near the firewall. Trying to keep calm about this, but I could use some assistance. I will use my phone to take crappy photos of what I have and place them here, if that will help.

Thanks!

UPDATE: I took a video. I hope the forum can play 3g2 format (3ggp2). That's all my lousy cellphone will do.

All he said was not to disconnect the battery. Nothing related to wiring.

I guess I can't upload video.

The wire that is left on the harness is a blue wire with a brown square plug. The instructions said that there is supposed to be an orange wire that will match with an orange wire from the 'lude. Apples and oranges.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

The orange wire behind the bumper is the harness that also has the wires for the turn signals iirc. The foglight harness wire is male and female. I can't remember which ones for under the dash and behind the bumper. I have both, but just never bothered to **** with it. So I just used the wire harness that came with the kit and had no problem.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

I'm using the harness that came with the kit. There's another plug, but I don't know IF it goes into any of the ports, much less which one. The write-up by 1BadBB6 is what I'm using, currently, for instructions. When he mentions the orange wire he says it goes to the orange wire on the harness. I don't have an orange wire on the harness. The only wire left is the blue one with the square plug on it.

Now that I think about it, the two plugs that I did have in ports 2 and 5 may have been wrong, for all I know.

I've emailed the company I bought these from and asked for instructions. But it's a weekend, so probably not until next year. With my luck.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

orange wire is by the clutch kinda hidden in there and the other connectors are wrapped up and you just need to find them when you take off the plastic fog cover.. its really not hard at all

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

I found the orange wire just inside the firewall. The HARNESS that came with the kit and runs from the switch down to the fusebox doesn't have an orange wire, it has a blue wire with a different plug than the orange wire near the firewall has.

Obviously I have a different kit than what 1BadBB6 has. I just need the instructions that should have been supplied with the kit that I purchased. This will probably be the only purchase I make from k2motor. No instructions, the switchplate doesn't snap in (it's semi-loose).. gah..

kind of unrelated to your situation but still worth mentioning; you can go to any advance auto/autozone/etc and use their scan tool. it tells you exactly what the CEL is and you can clear the code from it too

That looks like the kit I'm using!! I tried searching for fog light install instructions and did not see this one. THANK YOU, 01!!!

Gonna print this and (hopefully) finish install tomorrow.

Have a great rest of the weekend!

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

Okay.. so.. I go to Harbor Freight and buy some things (jack stands, oil filter wrench, oil drain pan), but they don't have bullet connectors.

I go to Ace Hardware, and they point me to the aisle for connectors, but I don't see anything labeled "bullet connector". The closest thing I can find is "butt connector". 16-14. Is this the same thing? It's only female connections on both ends.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

Technically they are "butt splices" and work well when crimped properly and the correct size is used on the wires being sliced.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

Thanks for the info, Q. Question: the orange wire near the firewall in the 'lude has an exposed male bullet connector; will that snap into the butt splice? Or do I need to clip the male, strip the wire, and crimp into the connector, too?

Thanks,

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

You will need a female connector for the male connector. Don't strip the male connector off the factory harness. You will need to cut off the wire on the eBay fog light harness to fit the butt connector to fit the factory one and put the female bullet connector on it and crimp it.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

Okay, so I'm not crazy. I need to find a female butt connector. I guess the blue tube with two female ends will only fit wires, and not the male connector??? I'm going in circles. Sorry.

Yeah you need to clip off the male and attach a female and I also use those butt splices super easy to use and work great.

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

I'm anal-retentive about s**t like this.

So the splicers I picked up.. I need to clip both the orange wire near the firewall and the blue wire on the harness, strip both 1/4" and crimp both in the splicers.

I just assumed that the male bullet connector would snap into the splice, but I guess not.

??

Re: I really hate to ask this, but..

Kinda hard picturing what your talking about... You strip the wires on both ends put the exposed wire into the tube enough to where they are touching the metal part inside and crimp it in the middle test and do a tiny tug to make sure they won't fall out and you are good to go.

I do have a crimp tool. Not that specific one, but it should do the job.

Someone else said to not clip the orange wire near the firewall. Did you clip your's?

i was crimping wires when i was 12 years old...not really rocket science

get yourself a test light also, will come in handy finding the "hot" wires and would prob answer your question on what that orange wire does
