JDM h22a won't rev over 3k RPM!! Limp Mode!!

Sup. I'm sort of new here but not quite. I always frequently check PZ and have learn a lot, but not enough yet. I had an stock 97 h22a4 red BB6 with no name brand cold air intake. I then upgraded to Skunk2 intake manifold and 70mm throttle body. I put an replica 4-2-1 headers into 2.25 custom pipes into Apexi WS2 exhaust. Also put an Walbro 255lph fuel pump. I then bought an p28 and street tuned it. Compression was low and within 2 months was even lower. There was a knocking sound on block, I think it's the rods.

I was decided whether if it's worth to sleeve block and etc or just get an JDM. After intense researching couple forums and PZ, I decided to get JDM. The 10.6.1 h22a. Good friend of mine who dealt with tons of Preludes and has an BB4, and currently building an BB6 from scratch, did the swap. He did clutch, rotors, pads and etc. I will soon take pics of car and etc. We decided to run it OBD1. Took a bit for rewiring crank sensor wires to distributor due to different write-ups and few different colors. Car started up with stock usdm ecu, not with p28. After couple days for minor fixes, I test drove it for a couple blocks. Ran good, just burp a little if gave it too much gas at once but with right tune problem would be solved. Sorry for long story but just trying to give all detail info.

Now is when problem started happening. Also when test drove it, I had installed AEM UEGO wideband. Now two days after, my friend tired turning on car and moving it and it wouldn't rev over 3000 RPM. He tired tracing back everything from distributor to crank and etc. Can't take crank nut off due to being super tight. Need to go local area to loosen it put manual tensioner and change water pump. Only codes throwing were o2 heater cuz of wideband and Intake Air Temperature.

I bought an Hondata s300 and tired many base maps but no luck. New code came up and it was DTC 4 which is CKP sensor which is the Crank Angle Sensor. Supposedly CKP is inside the distributor and he tired the distributor in his car and it ran. He recheck wires and seem to be fine. He done another JDM swap with stock oil and water pump and it is still running fine till this day. Fuel pump checked and its priming. Injectors seen to be working. It's chocking when revving to 3K RPM. We have no idea what can be causing this. I have been looking in many threads and no luck yet. Even he has to. If he can't figure it out, then I won't neither as quickly as he would properly figure . Any help or input would be appreciated.

Could be the crank position sensor. It is located somewhere under the timing belt cover so you will want to change that out as long as you are there anyways. I had this happen to my Lude a while back. I took it to my mechanic who pulled the code and fixed it.

Crank sensor is in the distributor too. atleast for obd 1 vtec dist. i had a limp mode problem and my car wouldn't go over 3k. bad tdc and crank sensor. swapped out distributor for obd1 vtec dist and rewired it.

Re: JDM h22a won't rev over 3k RPM!! Limp Mode!!

I just put an H22A in my 97 Lude last month, I also rewired from external to internal coil distributor and had the same problem, where I cut the plug with the 4 wires coming out of the timing case, and added wire to the dizzy, was done ****ty, I used bigger gauge wire then stock, so I used 20 gauge and shrinkwrapped my connections and wrapped all the wires tight with electrical tape, and the problem went away, reecheck your added wiring and I suggest using 20 gauge to match factory size wiring, hopefully thats your problem as well!

Also make sure your added wires aren't running over any high eleltric wires like spark plug wires. it will give a corrupt signal to the computer.

Re: JDM h22a won't rev over 3k RPM!! Limp Mode!!

Thanks guys. I'm going tomorrow and checking it out again. Gonna check wires and make sure it isn't near high electricity source. Good point. But funny part is, I ordered an new distributor TD60U because the one it came with, the cap was busted so instead of ordering new cap and rotor also, might as well get an new distributor. Got it for $90 and worked fine. My friend even tried it on his h23 to see if working properly and it did for his motor, but once he put his h23 dizzy, it got fried and didn't work anymore. I'm guessing if it were really the sensor then shouldn't the car not even start up? or better yet, it worked fine for 2 days test drive around the block and then adding more gas to it to all of a sudden to this to happened next day after. Shouldn't be the wires if worked couple times but will double check again. Gonna swap JDM dizzy also and see if any difference.

Re: JDM h22a won't rev over 3k RPM!! Limp Mode!!

Apparently we double check and rewire the wires over again and still same deal. Even with p13 only rev to 3.5k. We tried tracing everything over and checking, unplugging and plugging sensors back on to see. Dizzy fine cuz he had to borrow my for couple days cuz his inner seal broke and oil enter inside dizzy. We strongly believe it has to be the TPS sensor and gonna change IAT sensor as well.

Re: JDM h22a won't rev over 3k RPM!! Limp Mode!!

Well, the TPS is being replaced for one, cap was broken off. Not sure due to swapping it might of broke off and been like that for a while that didn't noticed. We tried testing it and couldn't get no proper readings at all. It either kept going up or towards negative and on. So we figure it must be TPS. Thought about testing TB and TPS on his BB2 but was alreay late.
