Icon9 Quiet ride - until alignment

Hey, everyone.

Up until last week, my 'lude had a nice, quiet ride. Then I got an alignment done, and now every bump I hit I hear a "chirp" noise. Took it back to the shop and asked them to recheck the alignment. They didn't.. they just inspected the shocks and struts and gave it a green light.

Any suggestions as to what it might be, if not shocks/struts?

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

Ball joints, wheel bearing, tie rods(if in the front), sway bar links, etc. You have to get down there and look to see if something is abnormal or loose.

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

jack it up and start moving suspension parts around, you will find your noise pinpoint exactly what part it is and replace it.

Could be bushings...I'm chasing the same noise after aligning the Miata, and that's where I'm starting.

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

Is it like a creaking noise from the rear? I have the same thing tho I can't figure it out some people say shock knock but it's not a knocking noise.

The noise I'm hearing is a chirping or squeaking sound from the front, kind of like a smoke detector that has a battery about to fail, that happens with every bump in the road. I can't hear it when the radio is on, but once I noticed it I've been driving more with the radio off.

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

Unfortunately, I don't have a floor jack. :( If I push down on the front end, I don't hear it, so I guess it's not EVERY bump on the road.

Honestly, I don't know. Have not looked at spare tire or anything else under the carpet in the trunk. Suppose I should do that.

Never heard of Harbor Freight (I'm in St. Louis, MO). I'll look around and see what can be got as far as jack stands go.

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

Ah.. interesting.. there ARE Harbor Freight locations in STL.. I just never saw them, even though I drive past one, every now and then. Thanks for the heads up.. going to go there, today, and get some jack stands. And anything else I think I need. Going to peruse their website.

2 3ton stands are 25 - 40 bucks, depending. Going to get the rubber inserts, too.

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

Sounds like a joint or knuckle. Have you looked at your engine mounts? Could be due for a replacement.

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

Well there is one in the front that sits bit low in front of the area where your headers are. Mine was shot a while ago and I just had it replaced. Aside from the two bigger ones on each side of the engine, there is one in the front and one in the rear. The rear one is a bit hard to get to.

If I were you, I would take it to a shop where they do suspension work to have them inspect it. Things wear and tear especially if your car is lowered like mine is also on tein full coilover kit.

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

Not sure if mine is lowered, or not. I _think_ it is coz speed bumps have recently become a PITA. :)

Re: Quiet ride - until alignment

I know how you feel about that! I know my front right coilover is probably due for replacement. Darn downtown LA driving!

Well if you don't know if its lowered you can always raise the car and see if you see any aftermarket shocks or springs. Another way is just seeing how the car sits of course next to another completely stock prelude :)
