help! what do you guys think :(

i bought my car earlier this summer. its a 2000 sh with 138000 miles. i know the car burns oil so i would just add some from time to time between my oil changes. well i was driving today on the highway doing about 80. my check engine light went on. about a couple minutes after that i noticed the car was barely pulling and was struggling to go uphill. then my oil light started flashing. i pulled to the side of the road and checked my oil and it was really low there was no oil on the dipstick. all i had with me was a quart so thats all i put in. i tried starting the car it wouldnt start without giving it some gas. once it started i pressed the gas a little and it made a loud knocking noise. it sounded like someone is hitting the engine with a hammer. if i let my foot off the gas it doesnt hold idle the car just dies out. i had the car driven back to my house on a trailer and now its just sitting in my driveway. i am only 18 and know very little about cars and idk what to do or where to start. any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Drain what oil there is and tell us how much metal is in it.

I'll bet it's a LOT.

FYI everyone...H22 won't VTEC when oil is >1qt low, so if you're too lazy (read: stupid) to pull your dipstick, make sure VTEC works every now and then.

so what do you guys think went wrong with the engine? is it worth fixing? or just finding a new engine? or selling the car as is? its a pretty clean prelude.

Nothing went wrong with your engine. YOU did wrong by not keeping an eye on your oil.

Rods or bearings, and possibly scoured cylinder walls.

"No Me Gusta" damage. You basically have a shell and transmission. It's cheaper to find a used motor, than repair the havok.

Ouch. I've made it a habit of checking my oil once a week and whenever I have my hood open in between.

actually it will. I don't know where you heard that. last time I changed my oil I had maybe 3 quarts in there (only let it get that low because I was planning on changing it anyway) and the car was still pulling strong in VTEC

Re: help! what do you guys think :(

vtec will not work after it gets around 1.5-2qts low. I put a qt in every 1000 miles and always have vtec its just after it gets low enough you dont have enough oil pressure to make vtec engage like it is suspossed to.

Depends on how much $$ you feel like dumping into it.
You can get another H22 for around $800-1K, if you have access to the resources to do a swap.

the one and only time I had a VTEC failure was when I first got the car. turned out I was at least 4qts low. that's right. there was one quart in the car. made it up to 6.5k then went into a limp mode. CEL was for vtec failure

Re: help! what do you guys think :(

Nick, the "easier" is implied, because you're not spending TIME and MONEY to tear down, hone, assemble and match parts to a compromised engine. Working double shifts to pay, there isn't a good enough word yet, LOL

What's all this vtec engaging? Anyone have a h22 block op can buy?
