CEL tool question

Ok, as I'm browsing PZ iI come across many threads talking about running the codes for the CEL. My question is do you guys personally have a tool that you use to check the codes or do you know someone and use theirs or..?

Also if you have your own where did you get it and what is it?

AutoEnginuity® - OBD2 Scan Tool - Professional PC and PDA Diagnostics
^^^^^
I found this one a while back but I'm pretty sure that it only works on OBD2 systems. This will be a problem for me in the near future as I am preparing to do and H22A OBD1 swap. So question two, does the tool you have/use work on only OBD1, OBD2, or can you read both?

I am looking to buy one of my own so I'm just trying to get more info to make a good purchase.

Thanks

Re: CEL tool question

You can only use the scanner tool for OBD2 since they have the diagnostic port that you can plug the tool into. OBD1 doesn't even have the port, so to pull the CEL you gotta do the paperclip-trick method.

Converting OBD2-1 starts getting very hairy. Cuz your still gonna have the OBD2 port, but the CEL's are stored on the ECU which is OBD1, and if you don't have the connector to do the paperclip method...

At one point, my car was OBD1, than swapped an OBD2 F22 into it, than a bit later converted the F22 back to OBD1.... totally forget what I did for CEL's tho.......

o that's right, I ignored them

Re: CEL tool question

i go to my local oreilley's and they just ask for your drivers license and let you use their scanner. they have the pieces to fit obd1 and obd2 (my 5th gen has obd2)

im sure most auto parts stores have this.

my dad bought an obd2 to usb connector that he uses with his laptop that can pull the codes for $11 on ebay here. works very well and the software is free. but his just pulls the code, doesn't check to see what that code means, but its just a google search away :P

$11 is much better than $200 to have your own scanner.

Actually it does have the connector to check obd1 codes. It's the little blue 2 pin connector right next to obd2 port. I've had to use it a couple times lol.

Re: CEL tool question

You can do the paperclip method on OBD1 and OBD2 cars. Way easier than those ****ty "Scanners."

i went to the DIY section on here and copied this thread for you to look through. in case you didnt know this is what everyone is talking about the paperclip, or wire testing your light...
How To: Diagnosing Your Check Engine Light (OBD I)

and its free pretty much, unless you dont have a little piece of wire or paper clip around your house...
