should i sell it?

got my prelude about a month and a half ago for $2600, put almost a grand into it in maintanence, new rims, and new tires. i have plans for it in the spring, and more things to work on.

Last Friday i had somebody offer me $4000 for it. im stuck because i have already put so much work into it, and have become attached.

so what do you guys think? btw its a 97 base 5 speed

Re: should i sell it?

You're never EVER going to MAKE money by modding a car, and from day-1 that you take delivery of a car (whether it be brand new or used), it's only going to depreciate.

So now you need to decide for yourself whether you love the car too much to part with it, or take advantage of one of the ONLY opportunities you'll have to make ~$400 on it, than use that 4K to buy another 5th gen, possibly in even better condition/lower miles.

Re: should i sell it?

Or take that $4k and put a downpayment into an STi or TSX ;) ayeee

Those deals don't come around. I'd probably sell it if I wasn't attached. I had the exact same situation. Bought my Prelude for $3700. Didn't really do too much besides fix up the body and spray bomb my wheels. Someone offered me $5k. I had to jump for it. I really don't regret it since I would of needed to put a lot more money into it to keep it going (engine was going, tranny was going... etc)

Re: should i sell it?

well the only thing im having issues finding is another car for less than 4k that i like as much/is as good of a car. i don't want to have a car loan because im 17, and my insurance through my parents company is $500 for PLPD, and $1500 for full coverage (6 months) and im not really comfortable putting PLPD on a car worth more than $3k. there are no more 5th gens around me (on craigslist) except for the car i bought (talked the guy down a lot, and he had the year wrong)

Re: should i sell it?

you have plans for it, you are attached, you are gonna regret it if you sell it... for $400 profit too? thats nothing. sure you wont get to many offers for more than you paid, but once you get deeper into it, you will never make your money back. i paid $2250 for mine, a few months after i bought it, only put maybe $800 into, that includes a full audio system, except speakers, and a guy offered me $3500 cash at a red light, he had the cash too, but i looked at him and said, your crazy as hell lol.

im keeping mine, but you have to decide what you wanna do. good luck on your decision

Keep it! Its only $400 your making. If the guy was offering 6 G's then I'd say maybe.

i bought my lude for $500, put less than 200 in it and had a offer of 2000.... that would of been a profit of 1,300... and its got 318k miles on original motor

Re: should i sell it?

I had my lude for 9 months. Sold it and came out even(After all repairs and everything). Sold it cause I was too big for it and would have died in an accident but I still regret it. So much fun to drive, nothing compares to the way driving that 4th gen was.

It is very fun to drive, I think if cleaning the egr ports fixes my misfire problem (finally found the plugs!) I will keep it and put new coilovers on it in the spring around the same time I paint it.

$400 is not even close to enough of a profit in my eyes. If you have plans, I would just keep on moving.

Re: should i sell it?

if it's a good car that you can drive for a few years then keep it. if it's a money pit, sell it and pocket the coin.
i paid kbb value for my sh. its got a ton of miles but it's reliable transportation. as boring as that sounds that should be first on the list unless you are into a cool car that sits around a lot.
keep it. you probably won't regret it. you say there are no others in your area? well if you like it...

I don't like rust, having said that, as long as the body is clean, I would say keep it, I have been into cars for along time now, stay away from rust, no point in putting money into something that is going to keep having rust issues. Post some pictures let us see it. Having said that you will spend that $400.00 in profit driving around trying to find another prelude.

Good luck
Tim
