Transmission Removal Questions

I pretty much got everything disconnected in the engine bay to the transmission. I removed all the front wheel hubs and axles. So far, so great. Now, I ran into a snag. On the centre beam, so I really need to touch the downpipe at all. I already snapped a rusty bolt on it and I don't really wanna touch any more for the fear of breaking more and really needing to buy a new header and downpipe because of broken bolts.

Is it possible to just remove the centre beam without doing any exhaust, because looking under the car. The transmission should slide right past it barely (even more with the centre beam off). I just don't like messing with rusty bolts without a torch (lack of money right now to go an buy one).

Is it possible to remove the transmission without removing any motor mounts too? I have to use my jack for the transmission and can't support the engine.

Re: Transmission Removal Questions

Obviously you gotta unbolt the transmission mount. And I believe you gotta undo the rear motor mount too.

And I believe you can get away with simply removing only the center beam and not the downpipe. Center beam is easy anyway, only 6 14 or 17mm bolts.

Re: Transmission Removal Questions

Got everything off and I can't get the damn transmission out. I have every bolt that I know off that they show in the helms. I tried a crowbar underneath and got the transmission and engine to separate about 1mm and it won't go any further. It will just snap back together and that's it. The other side towards the firewall will move a little down and that's it.

I'm so confused now on what to do. Is there a hidden bolt somewhere or something?

Re: Transmission Removal Questions

There's no hidden bolts. Double and triple check you got all the bolts that are stated in the manual, and if you're confident you got all of them, use multiple crowbars/flathead screwdrivers to pry the tranny away from the block EVENLY! Don't do one side, take out the crowbar, than do the opposite side, cuz that's just gonna push the first side together again.

Put one crowbar/flathead on the back of the tranny, one on the front, and one on the top, altho its gonna hit the head, so it's gonna hafta be angled towards the front of teh car.

Should be 5 bolts. (Not including the long one that goes through the starter to the block)

^^What he said. Also, since the weight of the transmission is directed downward, you'll have to lift it and pull it off in the same motion. If it's not perfectly straight, you'll create too much uneven friction on the splined shaft and you won't be able to get it off. Try a jerking motion to pull it off.

Re: Transmission Removal Questions

Got it. There was a bolt behind some metal thing to the left of the oil filter. I didn't see it, until I moved up on the car and saw it. :) I was looking at the manual and didn't see that for some reason. =\
