Clutch Hop

Okay i have had my car for about 6 months now and it does this super annoying thing where it feels like the car hops or chatters when i accelerate from a stop. Bare with me here as i try to explain it...

I have driven a stick since i was 16 always had them so i am very used to them. Sometimes when i am taking off my car 'chatters' its like when you do a burn out and when it starts to get traction you get the wheel hop. Its so annoying, i have to ride the clutch and give it extra gas to compensate and sometimes it still does it. I dont think my clutch is slipping because i can mash the gas in any gear at any speed and it doesnt slip. Someone suggested maybe there are hot spots on my fly wheel?

What do you guys think? Its so damn annoying.

Re: Clutch Hop

mine only does that when i let the clutch out too fast into 2nd gear. but i always thought it was just the 4 cylinders not being as smooth on the power as the 6 and 8 cylinders i have used in the past

Re: Clutch Hop

How old is your clutch?

How many miles on it?

Re: Clutch Hop

Your flywheel is probably glazed, causing the chatter.

Is it going to harm anything driving it like it is?

Re: Clutch Hop

Does it squeal at all too?

Right away I can tell you what it probably is. The previous owner probably used a stage 2 or stage 3 clutch kit. Not sure how much you know about cars and clutches, but a clutch disc is usually...well, disc-shaped. But when you buy a higher performance clutch they usually are a 6 puck or sometimes even a 4 puck setup. Meaning instead of having one smooth disc all the way around (like a brake disc) they have 4 or 6 small pads arranged in the same way. In addition they are usually made out of a semi-metallic compound usually using a type of ceramic. All of these factors combined cause the clutch to "grab" better. Technically speaking I'm not sure what causes the chatter, but it has to do with the compound and the style of disc.

I know all of this because I installed a stage 2 clutch in my Ford Thunderbird turbo coupe (bad decision: although it grabs stronger it makes it much less "driveable" and the squeal is annoying. Some like it, some don't.) If you like it, keep it. Otherwise you may want to replace the clutch. You won't hurt anything by driving it that way. My opinion: use it until it wears out.

I can hear a squeal when i press the clutch in. This is the answer i was looking for, thankyou

Also, my brake fluid in my clutch resivior is black, I was told to leave it because if its like that and i flush it out it may cause my slave or master cylinder to fail? Any truth to this?

Re: Clutch Hop

Black means it's very VERY old! New stuff is clear!
I'd replace it with new stuff, and if your wallet allows it, I'd also replace the master and slave at the same time as well. It's simply preventative maintenance, and will prevent you from getting stuck on the side of the road somewhere hundreds of miles away, if your old ones were to fail.
