ECU convertion! HELP!!

Lude owners. I just wanna ask if I convert my stock ECU to a new one. Do I have to go to the dealer to have it programmed to my car. and also a new key to program? if so, what kind of ECU is good for my car to be converted to. I have a BASE type (i guess) automatic transmission.

Re: ECU convertion! HELP!!

It depends on your current ecu/ motor combo. What do you have now?

EDIT: Okay well I'm going to assume you've got an H22A4 with a P13 since thats the stock for a 5th gen. You can go with an ECU like the P28 which is I believe a Civic computer, and then get it chipped for an H22, but there's not too much more power you can choke out of a stock motor.

There are usually tuning shops around every major city, we've got two in knoxville, and there's a few in Atlanta, and one of those seems to be the best that I hear about. It takes a pretty specific computer, or you can go with a Hondata system, which I'm not too familiar with myself but there are people on here that are. In short, no you cant take it to Pep Boys haha.

Re: ECU convertion! HELP!!

I did my whole 5 speed swap myself in my driveway last year. I have a 98 stock base model. I didn't do a god damn thing to my ECU for 6 months after my swap was complete, driving it daily 400+ miles a week . The car will still start and run with the auto ECU, the only thing is, the check engine light will stay on with a whole bunch of automatic transmission malfunction codes and shift solenoid codes.

After my swap was complete, I started getting the surging idle that everyone seems to get on these cars. After bleeding the cooling system 20 times, and messing withe the FITValve, and Replacing the IAC valve with no success...I finally decided to convert my auto ECU to a manual one by opening it up, un-soldering one tiny resistor on one side of the circuit board and re-soldered it onto the other side. I put it in and BAMM, no more surging idle. Car runs mint now with 238,000 miles!

Here is the link showing very detailed instructions on how to do it with good pics
The official auto to manual ECU conversion thread - Honda-Tech

NOTE: You can just buy a used manual ECU but then you would either have to replace the whole immobilizer system (the chipped key reader) with new keys- which would not work in your doors then. -OR- if you have the RED key that came with the car when it was new (which I didn't have). The dealer (or at least some of them that actually know what they are doing) can program your immobilizer system to read the new ECU using the key you already have. Only the Honda dealer or a very good car locksmith can program but you need the RED key.
