Need advice with parts replacement.

Hey guys I'm fairly new here and new prelude owner.
I need advice with replacing RF lower balljoint, RF wheel bearing, air filter and sept belt. So basically I need advice with what brands to get, where to get them, etc....

Thanks.

Re: Need advice with parts replacement.

As for the balljoints, you'll have to get a whole new arm. Wheel bearing, buy OEM, I hope you have a hydraulic press for that job. Air filter, K&N drop-in can't be beat. And I'll assuming "sept belt" = timing belt? Go OEM for that.

Re: Need advice with parts replacement.

The mechanic said serpentine belt it's cracking a little. And what do you mean by the whole arm for balljoint?

Thanks for response.

Sounds like he's talking about the timing belt. Best to go with OEM there.

They don't sell replacement ball joints, you have to replace the whole arm (upper/lower control arms).

Re: Need advice with parts replacement.

you can replace a ball joint with out having to buy a new arm.......

Buy an OEM ball joint and rent the tool from O'Rielly's. It's not an easy job but will save you money from buying a new arm.

Honda doesn't sell replacement ball joints.

Re: Need advice with parts replacement.

Honda does sell just the ball joints. They have a ball joint "kit" that I got for USD$54.xx. It came with 2 ball joints (might as well replace both sides since if one is worn, the other isn't far behind.), 2 new axle nuts, and 6 cotter pins (1 for each of the castle nuts you have to remove to get the knuckles off.).

The part number for the kit is 04510-SL5-000. Its a very good deal, IMO. I also had to buy new castle nuts for the lower ball joints since the old ones were so rusty, they didn't tighten properly on the new balljoints. The part number for one the castle nut is 90307-SL5-000.

SOURCE

Good luck! I just did the front lower balljoints on my prelude and it was an adventure and a half. The auto zone/orielly ball joint tool didnt work for me (Even with the honda adapter) and the axle nuts were pretty well stuck on there. I broke two breaker bars trying to remove them.

Thank you very much for response. I am a newbie at this whole DYI thing but lucky me there are how to's out there. Also I have TIEN adjustable coil overs and the last owner said ATTS light has been on since he installed coilovers. Does that sound right or ATTS is out?

Oh btw can I get these stuff done with just jack stands?

My response was based on the assumption that you had a base. For a Type SH, you'll need 2 ball joints per side. See my source link for more info.

You should be able to. The suspension stuff is all primarily on the knuckle so you just need to get the wheel off the ground.

If your timing belt is cracking, that should be #1 priority along with your balljoints.

You only need 1 of 04510-SL5-000 unless you're planning on doing the rear as well. That part # includes 2 ball joints.

If you checked my source link, you'd see that the front lower ball joints themselves work for both the Base and the Type SH. The Type SH just requires more parts if replacing everything.

Heres the source link again in case you missed it.

The knuckle and lower control arms are different for the SH, and they use different part#s
51220-SL5-013 and 51220-S30-N21

DO NOT BUY
the circlip or boots they come already installed on the new balljoints (I know the parts pic is misleading because they are available separately so you can replace a torn boot).

Ok I wont get those. Also when i got the inspection at Firestone they only pointed out one ball joint that was loose. I think it was 51220-S30-N21. do i need to get both anyways?

Re: Need advice with parts replacement.

No, but you might as well replace them both. They are over 10yrs old, and it will eventually wear out too anyway. Also labor is a little cheaper to do both at the same time then one now and one later. The -N21 ball-joint is the one on the radius rod.

Whoever pointed out that Honda does indeed sell just the ball joints, thanks for the correction. Also, does anyone know if they sell these ball joint kits for the 4G chassis (or if the 5g and 4g ball joints are the same maybe)?

Re: Need advice with parts replacement.

Sept belt or serpentine belt is the belt for power steering or ac and alternator. Most old mechanics refer to them as that because on v8's the belt ran the fan, alternator, ac comp, and sometimes the water pump. so you will need two belts.

If you don't know the last time the timing belt was done or if it ever was then that should be your top priority before anything.
