resonator delete, sould I or not????

Ok so I can't afford a entire new exhaust, but i want to add some growl to my prelude, I know every car sounds different with a resonator delete, but I need an idea of what the prelude would sound like,(5th Gen) I want to know if this would make it excessively obnoxious/ ricer/ farting/ droning/ type of noise, or if it just sounds good, and yes IT IS OK if at a few times it sounds abnoxious, I just dont want something that always sounds abnoxious. Like constant farting/ droning noise. anyone have this mod done that could tell me how it sounds???

For a second I though you were talking about the intake resonator lol. I wouldn't delete the stock resonator that's just wasted money of getting pipes welded onto stock. I have a friend that unbolted his stock muffler (axle back portion) and it actually sounded decent not loud but you can hear it more when he takes off, I wouldn't do it but you can try it nothing to loose.

Re: resonator delete, sould I or not????

Also if you want more growl just get a intake. Or delete your stock intake resonator for free.

I personally wish I would of kept the stock exhaust and done it right the first time, that being said. dont half ass your exhaust. get it all changed from headers back, or nothing at all, thats my thought

Re: resonator delete, sould I or not????

Stock exhaust with intake. I've had this for both my cars and I'll continue to do this setup. I don't want some loud ass ricer exhaust and I've noticed all inline4 exhausts sound like that. Just not my thing.

Re: resonator delete, sould I or not????

Dont do it!! I currently have a magnaflow muffler, and I had a shop do 2.5" piping with no resonator. Worst choice i ever made. The sound is alright. It has a nice, deep tone, but around 4k rmps it makes this weird raspy sound. I recommend doing stock exhaust with an intake.

So the intake resonator delete sounds good? mmmm maybe I will do that... does it take awhile and is it easily reversible? (in case i dont like it), and I'm in auto school so I can just take in into my school garage and do it

Thank you! very sraight up answer, but for the mangnaflow muffler (or just any muffler that you know of) does it have 2 exhaust tips? I cant seem to find any with 2 exhaust tips, cuz I wanted something that is similar looking to stock, just wondering

Re: resonator delete, sould I or not????

the thermal r and d exhaust has the stock look, and from what i've gathered it sounds amazing. pretty hard to get a hold of tho.
the intake resonator isn't hard at all. you'll need basic tools and a jack/stands. it'll take a couple hours at most. there's a really good write up on here that'll lead you thru it with pictures.
once you remove it, i can pretty much guarantee you won't want to put it back in. even when you're trying to sell the car. while your at it, get a k&n drop in filter to replace the stock one. it'll be just as good/maybe even better than any short ram tube you over-pay for.

Mine doesnt, but one of my friends has a z31 300zx (sexy edition) and he has a twin tip magnaflow muffler. Not sure of the model, cause neither of us have any idea! Btw his sounds incredible

Agreed ^^

But ultimately do what you want, can't hurt to try and see how it sounds

you have a link to the write up? , and also (yes I am a Noob) but do intake resonators even exist? Because when I asked my autotech teacher (26 year mechanic) If he could help me remove it, he looked at me funny and said that no such thing existed. Sooooo idk

Re: resonator delete, sould I or not????

The intake resonator does exist, and like the exhaust resonator it's single purpose in life is to quiet down intake noise. In the case of the Prelude, the part looks like this:

And it sits in the bumper, just ahead of the driver's side front wheel. Or passenger side front wheel if you drive from the wrong side of the car :) There's a write up on how to remove it somewhere on this forum, have a search around.

The air comes in, through the resonator then the filter, before being ingested into the engine and burned with fuel. The intake resonator also has a small valve on it which monitors the driver's thoughts and opens and closes according to how much he/she is sweating and what they are doing with their arms. This valve ensures low down torque and high end power, similar to the principle of VTEC.

Anyway, removing the resonator is a simple affair, probably take you an hour or so. It creates a lovely growl that you really only notice if you spent a lot of time in the car prior to removing it but either way it's a rorty noise and totally awesome. The paperwork says you should lose bottom end torque but I never noticed it, and I'm yet to talk to somebody who has.

I have all stock exhaust and a stock turbo thrush welded on. It sounds really deep and when you climb into higer rpms its pretty quiet. $60 in installed until i can afford a legit exhaust. Not bad.
