Icon10 Whats up guys!

Hey guys!

Just bought me a 98 Honda Prelude SH, it'll be ready by next monday. I can't wait, I want to be driving it already.

I've got a bunch of questions, the car I'm driving now is a modified 91 mustang gt 5.0. So dropping to a soft clutch and a lot less horse power is going to feel weird. So that I don't break it, I thought I might ask for help on a few things.

First, its got 146k miles on it, its completely stock and drives/looks like new. Specially after what I paid extra to have the paint touched up. My question is, what is the best rpm range in which to shift the car if you just want to drive normal. It revs up to 7k out of red line and I was wondering what rpm's I should be shifting at to just cruise.

I bought the car because my mustang gave me 11 miles to the gallon, lol. I'm not doing so great on this SH, gives only 19.4 to the gallon but thats alot better. My question here is, besides NGK iridium spark plugs and wires, what else do you guys recommend that I put on the car to give me better gas mileage, I was thinking of putting a new distributor cap and rotor too with a new coil pack.

And finally ( for now), lol does any one know where I can get the manual?!

I also need a new shift knob and floor mats because they are not included....where can I get these for cheap? ( and good )

Thanks alot guys, hopefully I'll be putting up pics soon and get to know you guys better, maybe get some idea's on rims and tires and other small bling bling touches!

You can find a manual and many other helpful resources here:
http://preludezone.com/showthread.php?t=3651

2800-3000 rpms is where I shift for normal driving. If I'm going down a hill, more like 2400-2600. Change your fuel filter because it's probably never been changed. Change the air filter if it needs it. No need for a new dizzy unless you need it. Plugs and wires are good for a tune up anyway. Change the oil and check the tires. I only get about 21 mpg... Could be better but I need to change all that stuff I just listed.
I have a shift knob for $6 shipped. It's not the SH stitched but it's what came on every other Prelude since 92, and a lot of Accords. Be prepared to spend a lot for a SH knob. Can't help you with the mats though. Good luck on those. PM me if you want the knob.

Thats kinda strange...I shift normally at 3500 to 4000 and i average about 28-29 mpg on premium so basically, about 370 something miles to a tank. Most of my driving is on long straight roads with no stop lights and whatnot...I really dont think a CAI would make that much difference, or is my SH just cool?

Sorry...I'm done whoring.:ugh:

Thanks guys,

What is a "dizzy?" "no need for a new dizzy" what is that? and what is a "CAI" ? cold air intake?

Where in the car is the fuel filter, and can I buy it at pepboys or autozone?
Is there a link that shows how to change it?

Here's a really important one- Do I HAVE to use 91 only, or can I use 87 and have the car run ok? or will I be messing up its performance/the car aswell if I use anything else but 91?

I've always loved this year model prelude and I was so lucky in finding it, I'm getting it from under 6k with the trade in of my mustang ,which for me is an excellent deal because in the price it includes a new paint job, weather stripping and molding, lol.

I bought it with mpg in mind because I have to drive about 70 miles every day to and from work. So its sort of a "commuter" that goes fast, lol- can't stand slow cars!

Man how in gods name are you getting close to 30 mpg??? the car gives 19.4 to the gallon, 15.9 gallon tank at 308 miles to a full tank, which fills at about 50 dollars assuming gas price is 3.20. Thats great mileage.

I'm hoping the NGK spark plugs will squeeze out at least another 20 miles.

Sorry I forgot to address this- About the knob, can you please send me a picture? I was looking at the "really" nice ones and they're 90 bucks and up, thats my insurance payment!

I just attempted to load a picture of my car, let me know if you guys can see it cause I don't see it anywhere on this post...

Dizzy=distributor
CAI- Cold Air Intake

Feel free to use 87 but it's not good for it. I'd rather spend an extra $3 a fill up to ensure my car performing at it's max. I just think there's a reason Honda says to use premium.

Look at the resource guide I gave you, there's a link to how to change the fuel filter. The auto's tend to get way better mileage. :/

My digi-cam is broke but just look at the interior shot of any non-SH 5th gen and that's what it looks like.

Cool,

I'll check into all that stuff. I'm gonna have to hunt down the mats cause the last thing I want is a dirty interior- I'm freaked about cooties =\ Plus I want it to look really clean in and out. What type of cleaning solutions do you guys recommend I use to clean out the engine bay? Cause its hella dusty, its got grease spots and alot of grime. Oh, My battery cables are the stock ones and they've seen better days, what do you guys recommend i replace them with? 16 gauge? what kind of tips for the studs? cause I'm gonna be putting in my sound system in there soon after I get it- also is a after market head unit install kit required when pulling out the stock stereo? I'm not sure how good the stock stereo is, I can't find any info on it online and I don't have the manual so....=\ I really have no idea just how good stock is.

Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it.

welcome and nice pick up.

simple green works pretty well for the engine bay.

stock stereo is decent. but if you're the type who likes some umph, it won't cut it. and yes, you'll need an install kit if you put in after market.

Great!
I've got a 500/5 JL amp, JL 10' subwoofer, no box yet=\ got to get the speakers still, getting an alpine cda-9883 on monday I think(its a birthday gift) Got to find the install kit then and some good speakers, I have a brand new Audiobahn competition Component speakers system, I might put that in the front, not sure yet- But if anyone is interested let me know cause I've had them for a while now and i haven't done anything with them.

Do any of you have any audio suggestions? I like really clear music, with good base, vocals and tweet. I don't like super thumping super loud everyone knows that you're hearing music, I like quality music that you can turn up if you want to listen to some Tool or something.

Thanks again guys!

Thanks for all the links,

I went to see my car yesterday, they painted it and took away most of the flaws it had, it looks great! He told me that they will include the shift knob once they give me the car. I'm not sure if I can spend 80-90 bucks on mats right now =\ I'm trying to figure out my rent, car payment, insurance, gas and daily expenses before I buy them, man they're nice though.

The manual on cd is a great idea! I think I will buy that..

Do any of you guys know the firing order for a 98 prelude SH ( mine) cause I'm gonna get NGK spark plugs right away, I need that PMG! lol

Have you guys seen a guy in here who's got a prelude with his gauges all in red? It looks awesome, I want to find out how I can do that but in green not red, cause my car is green. His #'s and needles are red and so is the background lighting in his gauges, it looks awesome.

Ok I'm going to stop ranting! lol

Thanks again guys, I hope I get it on monday so I can give it a good cleaning and waxing by wednesday and maybe have some pictures up by the weekend!

lilredlude had that, and it's a she.
Just out of curiosity, where are you from? Your car is green so I'm assuming the interior is tan. If you're remotely close, I want to trade my interior with yours, and my mats are only a few months old.

Hey guys,

I'm so pissed off and bummed. The mother truckers at the dealer don't have my car ready, and it seems they don't want to go through with the deal of some repairs they needed to make. I'm so pist off. On another note, the car i'm supposed to trade has a loose rocker thats making my car sound like its a freaking diesel truck, I'm not even sure if they'll take it now- i'm going to try and fix that today.....

I've got a feeling that my luck is the same as the guy on here who owns/owned a white prelude- "why can't i ever have anything nice" sigh!

I live in Los Angeles dude, and yeah she's got awesome gauges- I want that on mine but in green- what color is your interior? I'm a virgo- so I'm a perfectionist- so your interior better be excellent even to consider! lol

I get almost 27mpg average and 30+ on road trips. I shift gears at 4,000 rpms in all gears. If you are getting terrible gas mileage is a tune up issue, usually it's emissions system (O2 sensor) related. The ECU on this motor dumps on fuel when it senses a problem to prevent engine damage. Seems to be more of an issue with the H22A4 than any other Honda motor.

Would you suggest an 02 sensor change?

I spoke to the guys at the dealer earlier. I had noticed a vibration in the car when ever i was in high rpms and put the clutch down to shift i would feel a vibration- well I had them check it out and they told me that the clutch is fine that the vibration might be coming from the motor- that the motor mounts are fine so they're giving me a 3 month warrantee on the clutch. What could this vibration be, should I not take the car because of it? or could it be because i'm not shifting properly? I'm floring the clutch since I was test driving it i don't quite know where the clutch grabs yet so i'm not sure if its me or if the car has a bad engine. The car idles fine, drives fine, picks up speed fine, doesn't knock or have any leaks- the only problem i felt was that one, when i pushed the clutch all the way in and let the clutch grab- maybe i was riding the clutch?

Any help would be appreciated, I pick up the car today...Thanks guys!

does it happen when the rpms are high and you push the clutch? or does it happen once the rpms get up there?
