Black smoke and sutt

Hey guys I have a 98 base with a intake and pulleys, every time I stepoon the car it shoots black and grayish smoke and there is sutt all over the bumper like a boosted car. There is no power loss or anything. Let me know what you think could be the problem. In about 5 to 10 miles there is sutt on the car.

Re: Black smoke and sutt

Your burning oil. Prob the valve seals, thats what it was with my lude. But a leak down test will tell you more.

Re: Black smoke and sutt

Would a valve adjustment help if it is the valve seals? My engine is due for a valve adjustment and I'm also getting some black smoke and losing oil. (Sorry if thats a noob question. I still don't know much about engines.)

Re: Black smoke and sutt

I suggest getting new spark plugs, did that on mine and it helped some-what.

Re: Black smoke and sutt

1.just black smoke is our engines runing rich(this is normal)
2.if theres a blue tint to the smoke your burning oil one of two ways.
first way is leaking valve guide seals(moderately challenging fix, pulling the head off and breaking it down)
second way is bad rings(not for the faint of heart, meaning complete tear down of the engine)
3.if its white smoke coming out, you got a blown head gasket and water is getting into the combustion chamber.

Re: Black smoke and sutt

Alright the plugs are new. I am going to replace the distributor as well as wires. If that doesn't work i am going to try to work on the fuel system. The car turns over a few times before it fires and starts and i feel like it is loading up on fuel. When the car is warm it doesn't do it near as bad.

I have been watching my oil levels since i purchased the car and it has been rock solid. Car is not consuming any oil.

I realize running a bit rich is normal on a factory tuned car. My problem is that at times I'm getting lots of carbon soot all over my back bumper after only driving maybe 5 miles or so. It reminds me of what a friend of mines DSM bumper would look like after beating on it.

I'm just trying to get some ideas to help me get to the bottom of this. My car seems to still be running strong, also still drives fine. Stuff like this just gets me a little nervous. Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Re: Black smoke and sutt

My 98 does the same thing....I realized after looking at the
EGR ports, inside the header, down pipe, cat and the entire exhaust
that it has so much carbon built up that i either need to soak them
in brake fluid cleaner or replace. My car has 180,000 miles on it and everything
is stock from factory. Once I save up for new header and all the way back i will clean the EGR port and should be good as new.

Re: Black smoke and sutt

Good to know. Have any of you used an EGR block off plate. If so does it throw a code.

I was thinking it could be the EGR but I think wasn't sure if that was it. I will not be doing a new header one because I have heard that it is not a big gain and I have plans for boosting the car.

Re: Black smoke and sutt

if your egr is part of the factory system, and you delete it, why would it not throw a code? Of course it's going to.

Re: Black smoke and sutt

Sounds like your running rich too. I know my exhaust get's all black and nasty cause my o2 sensor is bad. Though it may not be your problem you could also check that.

Re: Black smoke and sutt

I think i was beating on the car before it was fully up to temp. I checked the plugs gap and did a compression test. After that I let the car get up to temp and took it out and ripped through the gears and there was no soot on the back of the car..
