Modifications to increase gas mileage.

Hey guys I just recently enrolled in a community college that is 15 miles away, I'll be commuting everyday for my first semester (then I'm transferring out). I'll be putting about 30+ miles on the car per day. What are some things I could do to my (automatic, I know, I know) 5th gen Prelude to possibly increase gas mileage?

I apologize if this is a reoccurring topic, I did my searches and couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance!

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

1. Try to drive in low RMPs.
2. Install air intake and exhaust for better air flow in and out.
3. Buy a prius.

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

If you have to replace tires any time soon, try to get some of those new "Low rolling resistance" tires. Make sure they're properly inflated. Keep up with all of your maintenance. Intakes help a bit, as well as exhausts. Lower the car, it reduces the car's profile, meaning less wind drag. If you've got balls and a few extra bucks, create a skidplate to reduce drag from airflow under the car. Keep the car clean, inside and out. Extra weight takes more power to move.

Dont use A/c or anything else that would draw unnecessary power.

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

Cool well I use the sport shift to shift my 1st to 2nd gear, I don't shift at any other time. Since my auto tranny is going out if I let it shift on it's own it either takes a ton of time or it shifts ROUGH. To bypass this I shift from 1st to 2nd at around 2k - 2.5k RPM with my sport shift, I would assume this is better what do you guys think?

Understood on the cruise control, I'll be on the garden state parkway so I'll be cruising from 70 - 90 MPH. Any recommendations on an intake that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and could possibly increase MPG? Could I just buy an ebay tube with a name brand filter and get better gas mileage?

Also recommendations on exhausts? I'm a total newbie to exhausts so I'll definitely need some guidance in that area if anyone doesn't mind. <3

Yes you can on the intake. I would get the piping on eBay then buy a K&N

There are a thousand exhaust threads. Search.

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

Does the size of the tube matter? Is there a reputable seller of the tubes that I could purchase from on Ebay? Personally recommendations and such? As a college student I'm tight on money so I certainly don't want to buy the wrong thing haha.

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

Just a standard 3 in intake piping that will fit your car. The piping really doesnt matter, you wont see much gain from $500 piping as opposed to $30, its the filter that matters more so.

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

I doubt you will see a different in mileage with an intake. Drop a k&n filter into it and your good to go. If you want an intake like it was mentioned ebay tube with a k&n intake.
If you want to improve gas mileage or get better gas mileage do a full tune up, clean egr, run some sea foam, properly tire pressure, drive in low rpms and if your able to take the freeway on your way to and back from school that would help a lot. It's not that hard for members to simply throw some name brand exhuats but here you go Greddy, Skunk2, fujitsubo, hks, megan and im sure there is some more I missed

I personally like my Magnaflow. Deep, rich tone without it being too loud and obnoxious.

Sell your prelude and get an older civic. You would notice much more of a difference by doing that than you would by spending all this money to barely gain any difference in mpg.

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

Reroute your intake so the filter sits over your header. The hotter the air is that your intake picks up, the better mileage you'll get. This modification is frequently used by hyper milers, and it works!

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

Michael J. Fox had it right: skateboard and hitch rides on car bumpers.

Stock maintenance only, replace what's needs replacing. 30-50 ebay CAI kit can go for gas. Look up "Hyper miling" to get some good advice, like parking so you don't have to use reverse, putting the car in neutral and coasting on straight aways, especially downhill.

THE BIG THREE UPGRADE, half a tank of gas at most, and pick up a person or two to chip in for gas. Fill up at night only, and knock out errands to and from school that require driving.
Hope this helps.

The MPG increase is true but who in their right mind would downgrade to something so crappy. I'd prefer a prius over a civic.

When going downhill, it actually uses less gas when you leave the car in gear and get off the gas. There is more load on the engine when at idle (if you were to shift into neutral) than there is when you're engine braking down an incline.

Re: Modifications to increase gas mileage.

But he has a transmission going out man, can't imagine coasting in gear being any good. But in hindsight, a crx beater to DD would be perfect. Maybe im not such a good example, I drive. K2500 3/4 burban as a DD. my mpg is single digits, LOL!
