Certified car inspection - necessary or not?

I am looking at another Prelude that I hopefully will find luck on. I know this is discussed all over the internet, but I just wanted to know specifically for the prelude if there are any issues that I can't check that I need a mechanic to inspect it for.

The car is an '00 type SH. So none of the notorious auto tranny problems.

Please let me know, I know a bit about cars but have never been able to really work on them. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Certified car inspection - necessary or not?

Its not necessary, but the $100 or so can save you a lot of headaches later down the road. If you know what faults to look for in a used car, its a breeze. Some things to check are:
-Oil dipstick, if the oil is a cream color, that means the car has a bad head gasket
-Look on the underside of the car for rust or drops of oil, especially where the engine meets the transmission
-Look around the engine bay for oil leaks (all around the valve cover, down the sides of the head, on top of the block)
-Look in the trunk carpet for more rust
-Look under the trunk carpet to see if its been rear ended. A bad accident should make it pretty obvious
-Look at the lines where the panels meet. Compare one side to the other to make sure theyre the same
-Look for any changes in paint color (especially compare the outside of the car to the door jams)
-Make sure all the VIN stickers are the same
-Start the car and listen for any idle problems
-While the seller revs the car, stand behind it and watch for smoke coming out of the tailpipe

These are all the things I could think of. Hope this helps and good luck!

Also look for rust in the quarter panels, fenders under the side skirts etc. Rust on fenders or doors or any removable parts are okay as long as they can be stopped but if it's on the body that's a bad thing. Also since it's a SH check to see if the ATTS is working properly. Also ask when was the last time he did maintence and all the maintence he has done.

If you can do a leakdown test, that would tell you a lot. Or at least a compression test.

Re: Certified car inspection - necessary or not?

Check for camber wear and all body lines. Also, check for rust spots on suspension parts. Those usually indicate the part has been bent and needs replacing.
