so i had a little ut-oh.

i ran out of gas today and when using a cheap portable gas container a small plastic straw slipped out and went down in my gas tank. Just wondering if its actually worth the effort of removing. from what ive heard the chances of it actually affecting my car are small due to the screens in the fuel lines. any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Re: so i had a little ut-oh.

you would have to remove the fuel pump to see if you can get it out. i dont think it will do anything but if it were me it would really bother me to know thats in my gas tank.

Re: so i had a little ut-oh.

The straw will more than likely dissolve in the gas. But it would bother the crap out of me and I would prob still drop the tank to be sure.

If you wanted to gain access to the tank, it would be easier to go through the fuel level float valve instead of the pump. The fuel pump has about 2 or 3 one-time use fittings that you would have to buy new ones for.

Re: so i had a little ut-oh.

If you're going to leave the straw in there, make sure you keep your gas tank at least a quarter full all the time.
If not, it is possible that your fuel pump will overheat (with or without the straw). When you add heat to shiitty plastic, well.. it melts.

I'm no chemical engineer, but uh.. I don't think you'd gain any extra HP if you add liquid plastic to your gas.. But! Since it's plastic, the straw'd probably float on the gas, so you'd have to be like on empty for that thing to even touch the fuel pump (not like I know where it's located anyway, I would guess the bottom of the tank? I'm just some dude trying to use what I learned in school to provide some input..)

Good luck man. Hope that damn straw doesn't introduce any new problems in the future.

Re: so i had a little ut-oh.

Classic!!! Better empty out the tank so it doesnt find its way to the pistons.

Um... How did you manage to spend 4-something dollars on a crap container when 10.00-15.00 get you a 5gallon jug with a reuseable nozzle?

Just keep your fuel more than half full till someone can check.

Re: so i had a little ut-oh.

In the fourth gen you can acess the tank from the truck. If the fifth gen is alike I would not even risk it. Pull up the panel and pull the pump out and stick your hand in the tank and go fishing till you get it.

Re: so i had a little ut-oh.

It's funny because it's true. There are just times, lugging around a Jerry Can makes more sense than fishing out junk from your fuel tank.

And these new pumps use the fuel for lubrication anyways so why run the car till empty?
