Need help ASAP with coolant leak

Hey, first I have a 97 SH and I noticed coolant on the ground today and I can't tell where it's dripping from. The general area I can see it dripping down from is the transmission. When I crawl underneath, I can see it dripping from the bell housing. I shined my shop light from the bottom and from the top of the motor and I cant see coolant spitting from anywhere. I really don't think it's the intake manifold gasket leaking because like I said, the drips are coming off to the side on the transmission. Can someone give me some ideas on where and what I should be looking for? I really appreciate it!

Re: Need help ASAP with coolant leak

Check all the coolant hoses by physically squeezing them to see if they are hard or still. If so theyre aged and may be cracked somewhere.

If you have the car running and its warm, the coolant leak should be somewhat evident (mainly cause it under pressure at operating temp), So i say check the coolant hoses with a flashlight

Look at the hose connection points (where they connect into engine FITV IACV etc for leaking fluid usually fluid doesn't evaporate immediately unless it touches something extremely hot so there should be fluid around those spots

Hope this helps

My buddy had a pinhole leak in the bypass hose on his 96 Civic and you could only see once it reached max pressure. You can get a UV dye kit from AutoZone or somewhere similar and once you add the dye to your coolant fluid, you can see it with the UV light from the kit and hopefully find the source of the leak.

Re: Need help ASAP with coolant leak

I had a coolant leak a while ago similar to yours. The coolant was also pooling on top of the transmission in my case. It turns out the heater hose (i think thats the name for it) wasn't creating a proper seal where it connects to the block and was leaking coolant at operating temp.

The hose was about an inch in diameter and connected to the block under the distributer. The other end connected in the back next to engine mount underneath the intake manifold. That part was a pain in the a** since i could barely fit any tools back there.

Re: Need help ASAP with coolant leak

All the coolant hoses look fine. When it's running (under pressure) the only place I can see coolant running down from is by the transmission if I crawl under the car. Are there any coolant lines that run there to possibly the atts unit? I'm really stumped and running out of ideas.

Re: Need help ASAP with coolant leak

Maybe it's something easy like the bleeder valve? Have you tried removing your intake tubing so you can see everything better?

Bleeder valve is locked down nice and tight. I took the intake tube off and still can't see where it's coming from. Although I have a nice view looking down on the puddle of coolant.. Should I just replace the coolant hose that comes out the side of the block and connects to the back by the rear motor mount? That's the only coolant hose in the vacinity where it could be leaking? I guess I should replace the thermostat/gasket too for good measure??

Re: Need help ASAP with coolant leak

UPDATE: so I found 2 holes in the heater hose, went to get a new on and put it in thinking all my problems were solved... Now, only to find after I filled her back up with coolant, the leak in the same area is now leaking worse! It is literally dripping down from the same spot nice and steady. I still can't see where it's coming from and can only see it when I crawl under the car.. PLEASE some one help and throw out some ideas... All other hoses and clamps are tight.. I don't know if I should be sad or pissed off?!?!

I also found that the lower radiator hose was only a little warm as compared to the upper radiator hose being scalding hot. Thought that was strange and wanted to mention it here to see if it might help and of you strategists help me out.

Re: Need help ASAP with coolant leak

So it's leaking while you are filling it up? Or only when the car is running/at operating temp? Could be the thermostat housing o-ring. It connects to the water pipe that runs to the water pump.

Re: Need help ASAP with coolant leak

Any luck? Today after work I parked my car and saw a puddle and its dripping in the same place. I replaced my heater hose last week and I am experiencing the same issues with upper hose hot as hell and lower hose warm.
