:| Worried about reverse gear..

2000 Prelude (Base)

My grandma was on her way home in the rain and my car was in her garage.. I went to move it so she could pull into the garage with out getting wet.. I pulled my car out, then went to close the garage door, (Which means I'd have to run out of the garage as it closed..) and as I was running out, .. *SMACK*.. I hit my head on one of the medal support beams. Jesus, it was pitch black but I saw a flash of white when I hit it.. I continued to make it out in time just before the garage shut, but I wasn't feeling well... I went to move my car down the road and I missed 3rd or 4th gear(?) extremely bad.. I don't really remember It seemed like a case where I let the clutch out before I had it in all the way, or I didn't ever have the clutch in far enough in the first place... Anyways, once I got into my spot.. I tried to shift into reverse, and it was like it was locked off..

(I know there's an 'auto-lock' feature when coming from 5th gear.. and it was just like that!..) I couldn't get it to go in, and I didn't want to force it... I tried letting the clutch out and in a little and it grinded bad.. Like it was halfway down.. Then all the way in... I repeated these steps and it seems to of gotten better.. It went from not going in 2-3 times of restarting the car.. to going in with grinding, then going in with ease...

I kept trying it as I moved around on the road, and sometimes it grindes and has a little resistance of going in, but now it all seems good.. I got it to where it goes in perfect every time almost, but it still happened once more before I stopped messing with it..

I don't know much about transmissions, but I read about the syncs/forks... But I don't know for sure.. It's weird that it seems to be getting better..

-All the other gears are fine..
-I've tried coming from 1st gear to neutral, to reverse.. and it's the same thing.

Ideas?

This seems to be a common problem amounst 5th gen preludes..

tldr: missed a gear.. then reverse wouldn't go in, now it seems to almost be back to normal..

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

Pretty common on any manual 'box, but especially seems to afflict Hondas. IIRC, there's no synchro on reverse, so it takes a bit more finesse (and sometimes force). When it hangs up, let the clutch out all the way and then back in and try again -- that often does the trick.

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

To actually check the mechanical parts specific to any gear, you'd have to crack open the transmission...more trouble than it's worth, unless it's really giving lots of trouble.

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

try shifting through all the gears (at a stand still, just clutch in and go through all) then put it in reverse.

I was having difficulty putting it in reverse last night, so I put it in 4th then in reverse and it worked.

might also be low/bad MT fluid? maybe time for a change.

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

All the other gears go in with EASE... and reverse is starting to go in with ease again, but still sometimes, I have to let the clutch out a little and let it grind into place. Hmm I didn't think about fluids.. That's possible.

The external parts you can reach are the shift lever (not much to go wrong with that), the pivot it's attached to (ditto, unless you take a hammer to it), and the cable that attaches the lever to the shift mechanism in the transmission. If the cable were kinked or binding (which can happen, but doubtful in this case), you'd have trouble moving from gear to gear, and you'd have that trouble in all gears.

Checking/changing the fluid couldn't hurt, especially if it's been in there for a long time -- you don't have to change gearbox oil as often as engine oil, but it still needs refreshing periodically. 90,000 miles sticks in my mind, but that may be for a different car. Check the owner's manual.

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

its super easy to change. just make sure you loosen the fill plug before you loosen the drain plug. takes 2L. genuine honda MT fluid is $10-12 for a 1L bottle, you'll need two of those. other than that just a drain pan, funnel, 3/8'' socket wrench, 17mm socket, and a hose that will fit in the fill hole and long enough so it is on top of the engine bay so you can stick a funnel in it. the fill bolt has a square imprint, you just stick the 3/8'' socket wrench in it.

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

My car has done this since I bought it. I just let the clutch out, press it back in and it goes in easy.

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

Also pretty common in Preludes...all of 'em, but especially 4th and 5th gens. Use some of those gears in the middle to reduce the change in RPM across gears, and slow the shift a little.

Why is it doing it? It wasn't doing it before I don't believe. Could it be my MTF?

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

sometimes mine won't go in.. let the clutch out and push it back in and then go for reverse...use that trick instead of grinding it in...when it goes in you can hear it...does the same thing in my sister's teg and my buddy's teg. they both make a loud sound going into reverse. i noticed alot of hondas do it going into reverse

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

But the grinding into 5th is annoying... It's scary, and I've ALWAYS had transmission problems...

You guys don't understand!

I've dealt with gears screwing up my whole life... My first car was a 93 accord which had the hardest shifts EVER.. it was an auto, and it was a loud clunk every shift.. so I got a motorcycle and second gear went out on it 2 days after I bought it.. Then I got a new motorcycle, and it got HIT 3 days after I got it (totalled).. Then I got a 99 accord.. and the pump or whatever lost pressure and now it's screwed up.. takes 3-5 seconds between gear changes and slips like hell.. , so I got this 2000 prelude, and now it's doing this! wtf!!..

I can't AFFORD anymore things.. I just want something that shifts properly! I thought by getting this manual it would fix all my shift problems, but nope...

God.. I'm going to change the fluids tomorrow and cross my fingers... I really can't handle this

Re: :| Worried about reverse gear..

Just take off the tranny. Crack it open and install some carbon synchros. Problem fixed.
