Icon5 Looking to buy this Lude

I'm going to look at this car this weekend, but I'm not sure if it's a good buy. The guy seems like a straight-shooter, I'm just posting to see if you guys think it's a good deal:

"I'm moving to California so I'm selling my: 1999 Honda Prelude 2D Coupe
Manual, 5-speed, 168K miles

Everything is stock (except for new headlights)

Volk GT-N wheels with new tires (<1000 miles)
OEM Lip Kit
Rear Spoiler
New Battery, VTEC

$4000"

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

check and see when he had the timing belt done and if he's kept up with his oil changes and regular maintenance. 160k on a prelude might seem like a lot, but if he's kept up with everything and hasnt beat the hell out of it then you should be good. If the wheels are legit, then the're a nice chunk of change in themselves. I'd offer him 3600 and see what he says.

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

I did the timing on my motor thats out of the car, but do you have to pull the motor to do the timing? I have a 2000 base 5 speed with 97k as a project car, but now i need a daily. Last Wednesday, my little cavalier was eaten by a hungry UPS 18-wheeler :(

Just have a mechanic do a quick look on it, they know what they're doing and it would save a lot of time.

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

I do all the mechanical work with my dad. He's going with me, so he's pretty much my mechanic. I don't feel like driving 2 hours for a piece of crap so i'm grilling the guy with questions about all the little stuff. Thats what this thread was supposed to be, more of ppl beinging up the little things i'm not thinking of. I've already asked about the quarter panel cancer, timing belt, clutch, tires, brakes, paint, etc. I was looking for the little things people bring up that I may not have thought about.

Ask for oil leaks!
Axles, wheel bearings, ball joints... any suspension work that might affect drive-ability.

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

Why does the seller mention VTEC? Red flag for solenoid issues. Gauge lights and see if the gauges are working. Also check the tire tread depth and close the doors to hear rattles.

The volks make up for the 4k price tag, but that isn't much either. Test drive is in order.

Looks good on the outside see if he has any maintenance receipts or anything like that. The previous owner of my car had a enough maintenance receipts to make a book and that's what made me buy my car along with it's good condtion.

Maybe because the battery that was in it was probably from 1999

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

Make sure title doesnt say Salvage anywhere on it!!!! Specifically ask seller if the title is clear and not "Prior Salvage" I had a guy try to sell me 4th gen with salvage title and he was real sneaky about it.

otherwise car looks clean on outside.

Check oil , coolant, powersteering fluid, brake fluid, tires, check for wrinkels in body under trunk carpet.(indicate a structural damage from wreck) see that doors ,hood and trunk close smoothly and flush with adjacent body panels. stand back from car about 15 feet and look down both sides of car to see if all the lines are straight.

not just interior pieces, fenders popping out of place, missing a bolt on the spoiler, the speakers were replaced, only 2/4 bolts are being used, stuff like that. worse case scenario, the car disintegrates

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

Check out the timing belt, and all other belts, check seals like the camshaft seals or gaskets and o-rings. Those little things are always super annoying and can actually start something bigger than you'd think, cost wise. Check all pulleys, especially the crankshaft pulley. Ask for maintenance receipts, make sure he didn't do anything unstable with the engine..

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

Well the hunt comes to an end. There is an oil leak somewhere, but I'm going to pull that motor and drop in my other h22a4 with 96k on it. car runs, shifts, and rides like an absolute dream. power everything works, drove it home myself an hour and a half from Boston. $2,400 cash and carry. Good deal, yes?

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

Good score man. Disconnect the battery, engine degrease the places where the oil pooled, clean with a can of compressed air then wait for the oil to show up. If that is the only true problem. If its a major leak, at least you'll know where it is and if it's repairable.

Re: Looking to buy this Lude

No sense in degreasing it in the car... in my family, every motor in every car has been out at least once, so it's out and on the floor. Split the tranny, new clutch & flywheel, clean top end, redoing pretty much every seal you can have on the engine. all new fluids, new timing, so she should run for another 100k at least.
