My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

So I was driving the other day (97 SH) and the speedometer and tac dropped to zero and all the electronics in my car got dim. I was able to get her back home and in the garage and now she won't crank. She cranked for me once the next day. Then when I turned her off and went to crank again and she just churned a little bit. Now she just clicks when I turn the key. The battery is good, all my lights come on fine and the stereo works. Because she is clicking I'm pretty sure the Ignition switch is fine. It has been really hot and I tried disconnect the green two prong thermal sensor. And she STILL won't crank. I'm about to check into the starter.. finally have all the tools I need. Any suggestions on what might be the problem?? I've been searching the forums for the past two days. I also do have a copy of the service manual for her. I mean the starter shouldn't be the problem because it has no correlation with my tac and speedometer dropping out.... please help!

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

First the obvious.
Did you actually have the battery tested at a shop or auto store?
It could have enough juice to run the stereo, lights yet not enough amps left to actually turn over the engine.

I had weird issues with another car a few months ago. Similar things happening and it was in fact the battery.

2nd, check your grounds in the engine bay, dirty or loos connection on starter. May be a bad starter solenoid as well.

Do you have any problems with the crank shaft pulley or the timing belt at all? Get back at me I might be able to tell you what the problem is.

try jumpping the car off another one and see what happens. Could have a bad cell in the battery. Also, is the check engine light on? If so, why?

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

The battery is all good. I have checked it with a voltmeter and ammeter, the crank shaft and timing belt are in good condition. The engine light is NOT on. I have checked for CEL codes and I am giving no codes whatsoever on my dash when I short the OBD II and turn the car on.

Doesnt the starter click when it has gone out? May not explain the lights and stuff on your dash not working but would be why it clicks when you try and start it..

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

Well it sounds like a bad starter. Depending on where the click is that's your problem. Try checking out your alternator as well. It's probably your starter relay but it's hard to tell without the car in front of me.

Another suggestion would be to check your battery, you might have a bad cell causing it to not take full charge and let loose of ignition. Clean all corrosion if you have any.

You might have somehow enacted your immobilizer... rare but possible.

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

Hey guys, I'm 100% sure its not the battery. Just got the starter out and took it to advanced auto. The solenoid popped but didn't spin. The motor in it is dead. Got a new starter and plan to put it in tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted. For some reason, I have this ere feeling the starter isn't the only problem. Haven't cracked the alternator yet, but if the starter doesn't get her going, then i'm going to check the under-dash relay, and then the alternator.

Yeah that's what happened with my dads old truck.. not enough juice to crank the starter motor but if you tested the starter and it failed I guess that's your best bet. Good luck and let us know ASAP!

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

id agree alternator sounds fishy
make sure youre battery terminals are clean and tight this hot weather makes them expand

i had a nissan truck with a loose alternator plug and when it came undone, the lights would dim and the battery would slowly loose a charge while running, until eventually it would go dead.

jump off another vehicle too start yours, then use your voltmeter and check the voltage going in to the battery. it should be at least 14-15v when running If the voltage is 12 or less your alt is not working.

also by jumping you could have diagnosed the starter as well ie if it starts witha jump starter is good, if not bad starter

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

Problem Solved:

First let me say, I am an idiot. So please hold onto your tomatoes and lettuce and just make a good salad. When checking my starter with my current battery.. That was reading 12.07 volts. The starter DID not work. I removed it and took it to advanced auto zone and had them check it there.. The solenoid popped but did not spin. However, after replacing my starter it just made a whining noise as if it wasn't getting enough charge... then I remember the most basic physics equation V=IR.... sure the volts are right... but are the amps? Yes I have a weird fetish of dressing up like myself and acting like a total freakin idiot. Took the battery to Advanced and they tested it... first off its lasted 7 years.. second it had 112cca when its rated for 600cca. I let them charge it for 45 minutes and came back with only 210 cold crank amps. NEW BATTERY. Put the new battery in and she started up, with a really really weird noise. I'm pretty sure its the reduction gear that the starter hits. Anyways she rides smooth, VTEC works great. I'm am probably still going to take it to advanced auto and have them check my alternator to be on the safe side. Hopefully me being a complete idiot will enable some other knucklehead to find this post when they are having the same problem

I'm not being too hard on myself. Can't make fun of anyone till you can laugh at yourself. What's really ironic is I have three years of college under my belt as a PHYSICS major, and I obviously know how to check a battery.. cough cough.. lol

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

LUL. I just raised it...talk to the guy that put it up in the first place. He's the one that went all in No need to make fun of yourself....but it is fun to laugh at your mistakes. It's a lot better than the alternative. I have 3 years of college under my belt as well, going onto my fourth......but I'm a music ed major, so that really doesn't help at all with cars. The only thing it kind of helps with is audio.

Lude 27 learn from your mistakes , we all make them,
You can read a manual on WHAT to do, but you dont know HOW to do it without practice. Never be afraid too ask for help, sometimes its better to pay someone to do the job if things get too difficult. There is nothing worse than trying to fix something, and you end up breaking it instead.

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

I hope you guys don't take my comments about myself seriously. I was hoping for a laugh with me cause we have all been down that road.

Western I say the bet never happened cause we didn't shake on it. I am a BIG music enthusiast too. Play a couple instruments and have done audio engineering on tons of different programs. If you find a great set-up for the ludes PLEASE let me know... it seems the acoustics were not designed to achieve a great quality sound.

Merddin: Amen to that. Spoken with true words of wisdom.

rip your speakers out of your tv and duck tape them to the back of your front chairs works great, wire them underneath the side panel and to the harness, surround sound at its finest

Re: My BB6 has died.. need advice on bringing her back

Turns out I'm not out the woods yet... Alternator bets where right. Took my car to advanced auto, zero volts coming out of the charging system. Went to crank the car in the parking lot and she wouldn't crank. I had to wait 45 minutes for them to charge my battery. Time to look into the charging system before just replacing the alternator. I'll keep you guys posted
