Engine temp acting funky.

So yesterday night, I was driving through the Whataburger drive through and it was taking forever. I noticed my engine temp was rising and was nearly at the top. As I drove off and drove home, the temp went back down, and fast. It reached less than half way by the time I was just two blocks from Whataburger. Anyone know what could be causing this? Is my engine actually getting that hot or is my gauge jacked up?

Re: Engine temp acting funky.

Im not too good with things like this but maybe your water pump is going out. Or your really low on coolant or broken radiator. If that happens just put your heater on full blast and hope it goes down before you turn off the car.

Since it went back up after you started driving again, It sounds to me like the rad fans aren't working.

I've never had problems with overheating at idle. Overheating in general is not normal nor safe to the engine.

That's what I'm thinking too. But the temp gauge goes down really pretty fast. Is that indication of a faulty gauge/thermometer?

Sounds to me like your rad fan isn't working. Yes the temp could go down that fast. Coolant needs that air flow to cool down.

Re: Engine temp acting funky.

Turn on your car let it warm up and just watch and see if the fans come on and turn your AC on full blast.

Re: Engine temp acting funky.

Both fans should turn on immediately when you turn on your ac it doesn't have to be up to temp.

Re: Engine temp acting funky.

most likely bad thermostat. When you acclerate, you have the fluid pushing through, when you're at idle, it's not strong enough to push through. I've had this happen on both of my preludes

Re: Engine temp acting funky.

Wow same thing has happened to me recently. Definitely a serious problem brewing. I will be checking the thermostat, fans and coolent. I replaced my water pump a bit more than a year ago.

Re: Engine temp acting funky.

check coolant level (when cold dont open when hot lol), if level is okay start car with A/C OFF let car idle until it reachs half way. Once it reachs halfway keep a close eye on both the coolant temperature gauge and the Right side (passenger side) radiator fan. this one should cut on when your car is near overheating or is in fact over heating. if your cars temperature gauge rises above half way and your fan is not coming on. then its 100% a fan issue (assuming all else is properly working) now comes weather its the fan its self, a short in the wiring, a bad relay, or possibly blown fuses.

on a second note you should check to see if your driver side radiator fan works as well this should cut on when you turn your a/c on. ( i remember you installed a new radiator on your car make sure the radiator fan plugs are pushed in all the way on the connectors to the harness. and just double check all your work man. this is all assuming every thing else is properly working as well!

Goodluck!

Re: Engine temp acting funky.

if you ground out the sensor wire then the gauge will rise...if something rubbed up against it and grounded it out temporarily then the gauge would spike until it quick grounding out..you can check it...just ground it and see if the gauge moves...easy when you have 2 people
