Sunroof rattle (revisited)

Ever since I got the car, my sunroof makes gunshot noises and rattles like crazy when opening it. While it wouldn't rattle while closing, when it sets down and fully closes, it sounded like an explosion. After some research, I applied some white lithium grease and it was smooth for months. Quiet and smooth when opening, relatively quiet when closing. Fast forward to a couple months ago, and the rattle came back. Applying more white lithium grease eased the problem for the most part.

However, since a couple weeks ago, applying more grease doesn't help anymore. In fact, it seems to be getting progressively worse. I tried cleaning out the rail completely (as much as I could without actually removing the sunroof glass) and re-spraying with lithium grease, but the white grease turns immediately black after usage and the rattle is still present. And it sounds like a giant explosion when closing it again.

I'm outta ideas . If this continues, I was thinking of cleaning out whatever I can, then then using silicone grease instead of the white lithium grease? Anyone have any other suggestions?

Also, I don't think my sunroof really has a problem of rattling when I'm actually driving with it open. Only while in the process of opening and/or closing it. Though I blast my music, so if it does rattle, I wouldn't be able to hear it lol

Re: Sunroof rattle (revisited)

Mine was rough on sliding and opening. I put some wd-40 and almost a year later no problems.

Do you think I should clean it first before applying some wd-40? Cleaning the rails is such a pain in the ass...

Hmm I've read mixed reviews on the usage of WD-40 for our sunroofs though. Perhaps I'll try adding a bit to the rails - though I'm not sure how the mixture of white lithium grease and WD-40 will be.

It just slams really hard, haha. Though it really does sound like the glass is about to also break the car as well lol

Re: Sunroof rattle (revisited)

Just spent over an hour outside in the hot sun cleaning the rails as much as I could, and then testing out the sunroof with first only wd-40 applied without success, then cleaned it out again to spray silicone grease without success, and finally cleaned that out to re-apply white lithium grease. It rattles the least with the lithium grease but it still rattles quite a bit.

I find that putting some weight (not a lot necessary) down on the front of the glass (i.e. the part of the glass closest to the windshield) resolves the issue. Could this mean something to do with the screws? I tried looking for them but they're in hard-to-get areas and I couldn't get a good look.

Most frustrating thing ever. I'm open to any other suggestions. How much grease should I be applying?

Re: Sunroof rattle (revisited)

Mine rattles too not too bad only at times. WD-40 or any kinda of grease on the rails won't make the rattle go away just makes the opening and closing smoother. Im not familiar with the whole sunroof setup maybe the seal is old and cracked that's the only thing I can think of.

Re: Sunroof rattle (revisited)

When I first applied the white lithium grease half a year ago, the rattle disappeared completely. It was like I bought an entire new sunroof assembly. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work anymore. Guess I'll just have to leave it for now before I try taking it off and breaking something else lol

In fact, just today, the weather stripping closed on itself and squeezed itself out. Had to poke it back in while closing. Now the stripping is all contorted and I dunno if this will become an ongoing problem. One issue after another with these cars eh....? lol

Re: Sunroof rattle (revisited)

I'd try your best to get that molding back into the sunroof correctly all you need is water getting into your car.

Re: Sunroof rattle (revisited)

my sunroof rattles/bounces when opening but is completely smooth when closing. Its annoying but the sunroof still works and seals. According to the previous owner, he applied grease to it several times but it never helped. Judging by the amount of people with the same problems in this thread, Im guessing noisy sunroof's are common on these cars.

Yeah seems to be a recurring problem. Everytime I close the sunroof, gotta poke it in properly....

I don't think this problem is limite to Preludes. My buddy's 06 RSX had this same problem - we both applied white lithium grease at the same time and the problems subsided. However, my issue returned and his is still fine. I suppose the most important part is that the sunroof still functions.

Re: Sunroof rattle (revisited)

It don't bother me too much mine does it now again and it only happens when opening. both 4th and 5th gen we had did it on opening but not closing. you's have to take it apart and study it to see how it works and why it bounces

Mines opens and closes good. Im gonna look at mines tomorrow to see if there's any seals that could cause the rattle.
