Icon9 Gas reserve

Not sure if this has been asked but in a 5th gen, how much gas do you have left once the low fuel light starts to come on and off? I am in a bind, no payday til Tuesday and need to make it to work and back one more day. Light started to come on yesterday morning.

Re: Gas reserve

I think you have about 2 gallons of gas once the low fuel light comes on. someone that knows a little more about this can correct me if i am wrong.
Hopefully you don't have to drive too far to go to work

Thank you. That would explain why I never seem to get more than 11 gallons pumped the times I go to the gas station with the needle on or just above the "E"

Re: Gas reserve

Honestly it depends on the fuel float. if it's broke, it could be giving you poor readings. you could have extra gas, which would be great, or you're on the last quart. Best advice I can give is drop 10.00 on a credit card and pay it back on payday. If your prelude runs out of gas, you risk damaging the fuel pump, and that is definitely not bueno.

Re: Gas reserve

well i know that a 4th gen tank is 16 gallons to fill up. and when i filled mine up when it had one bar left i put about 14 gallons in. (cost me 75 bucks ) so it would seem for the 4th gens one bar means about 2 gallons give or take. no clue about 5th gens though.

Re: Gas reserve

I'm not sure, but the easy way to find the answer is to run your car to the light then fill up. Subtract that number from the full tank capacity.

I would do it myself, but I am not low on fuel yet lol

Re: Gas reserve

Thank you everyone. I made it home today. Not sure I will make it Monday but at least I am home. At 15.9 gallons, the most I have seen on the pump when I am really low is like 13 gallons so I guess 3 gallons when on E, maybe 2 on the light? I will definitely post how much I was able to put in on Tuesday when I get paid.

Re: Gas reserve

I'm with Sideswipe. The low fuel light on all Preludes is notoriously variable. On both my old 2d gen, and the 4th gen I have now, I've seen that orange glow as early as an eighth of a tank, and nothing at all down to empty. I don't trust it any further than I can walk with a gas can.

Re: Gas reserve

The amount of gas our cars hold is kind of a debate. The car manual says that it's 60 litres, which is 15.9 gallons, but I think it's actually something like 13.9 or something. The most I've ever filled up was either 11.9 or 12 gallons, and at that point I felt like I was running on fumes. So its something like 2 gallons when the gas light comes on. Also, I figured out that the sensor is the back right I believe just by going on a hill and around curves and seeing the gas gauge move. If you're facing up on a hill and you park there, it's gonna show a bit more than you actually have, and vise versa. If you're going around a highway curve, ie an exit ramp that's going to the right, it's going to look less than it actually has(and vise versa). Someone can correct me if I'm wrong though.

Re: Gas reserve

According to the HELMS the fuel light is SUPPOSED to come on @ 2.5 gallons left. When driving on the highway, and the light comes on I know that I can drive at least 60 miles before really needing to worry.

A good friend of mine once ran his 5th Gen dry. He found that a solid yellow fuel warning light = 62.5 miles before running out of gas. This is at 70mph highway speeds, no a/c & 40ish ambient temperature.

When I put gas I only put half a tank at a time just cause I thought it was suppose to save on gas cause it less weight you have to drive around with.

Where in the world did you hear that? You just make yourself stop for gas a lot more by doing that, and probably cost yourself a lot more money than you need to.

Re: Gas reserve

Ok, I finally got paid and filled the tank this morning. I was able to pump 13.3 gallons.
Last night on the way home from work the fuel light came on and stayed on this time.
I guess I am going to give a conservative guess that at least on my car, I have about 2.? gallons left when the light stays on. Seems to match what others posted as well.

It's a good thing to know when you are stretching that paycheck.

Uh 360 miles to the tank??? Are you a 5th or 4th guy? I got 315 once....But that was all highway and not too much heavy driving. Please tell me how you get 360 miles to the tank.....

You must have been running on fumes. I'm pretty sure the tank is 13.9. Gallons

Re: Gas reserve

My mostly stock 97 sh with 100,000 mi gets around 300 mi between refueling i could get 350-360 mi /tank if i drove with low fuel light on for a while.
My owners manual and other various resources say 15.9 gallons ina tank

I have a steep hill and it will make my fuel light come on with 3-4 gallons left. But , it wont stay on until 2.5-3 gal remain

most gas ive put in was like 13.6 gal which left me with 2.3 gal approximately
i drive 15 miles to work and i can easily take it there and back 30 mi after light comes on.

i get around 22 town and 28 highway so i figure 60-75 miles would be a reasonable estimate to drive after light comes on

Re: Gas reserve

I can tell you with about 98% certainty that they lied or something on the 15.9 litre fuel tank. If there was 15 gallons, I could get 315 easy. On the highway trips, I could get at least 400 to the tank. Either they lied about the fuel capacity, or they calibrated the fuel gauge to look really empty at 11 gallons and the fuel light to come on with 4 gallons left. That doesn't make any sense....
