Question!

I did researched on this but just got confused and lost in most of it, also none of it had all 3 of my situations going on at once like me.

First I notice my VTEC not engaging went past 5.2k and nothing didn't go much past that rpm cause I didn't want to screw anything up. I haven't been able to clean my vtec solenoid but Im hoping it's just clogged up. A few days later I was in park, reached to my backseat to get my sunshade thingy and floored the gas on accident and noticed my Rev limiter is at 6k confused I revved it again and it bounced right off 6k as if it was 8k. Today I noticed I small rod knock it's not loud and doesn't get any louder when I rev it. Kinda weird how this happend one after another although I doubt their related I just want to make sure.
So here's my thoughts, the small rod knock needs a valve adjustment? correct or no? Also would my VTEC not engaging affect my rev limiter being at 6k?

Re: Question!

Also I read up if our cars are still warming up the rev limiter is automatically at 6k until it's warmed up it will go to 8k. My car was warmed up I had just driven it for about 20 minutes.

Re: Question!

Rod knock is the result of the rod rattling around on a damaged bearing, due to oil starvation. A valve adjustment will do nothing for that. If you're hearing your valves instead, that's a different story.

Hm how do I tell the difference? I think it's a rod knock.

Re: Question!

Have you checked your oil recently? You could have an oil leak or be burning alot of oil and not notice it. That could be why vtec isnt engaging(no oil pressure) and why you could have delveloped a rod knock(no oil being in the motor)

Re: Question!

Im gonna check it tomorrow morning. It should be good though. I think my cam seals are leaking also my cam cap seal but it's been leaking for a while but it's very small and never had a problem with vtec in the past with them. Im hoping to do that soon maybe in a week or two.

Re: Question!

yea bro you gotta make sure and check your oil regiously. The h22 loves to burn oil, it's normal so don't get all worried up about that. I usually check my oil every 2 weeks or earlier.

Re: Question!

Just from reading around here a bit, I've read that correct oil pressure works in correlation with the VTEC kicking in at the appropriate time. If your oil level is low, it could also have something to do with your VTEC not initiating at the right time due to low oil pressure.

Also, one way to possibly find out if your rod bearings/crank bearings, etc might have gone bad is to change your oil. There would likely be small brass (or other metal) shavings or hue in your oil if you stir through it. And also if you cut your oil filter with a hacksaw and take a peek inside, will definitely clue you in to whether or not you have any bearing issues. I had my crank bearings go bad once, took my oil filter off and cut it....had about a tablespoon of brass shavings inside :(

Let's hope that's not your problem. Hopefully you just need to add some oil, and that will solve most of your problem :)

Re: Question!

Well I checked my Oil and it's right under the 2nd hole. Today when I started my prelude I didn't hear a rod knock at all kept it on for ten minutes and nothing... it seems to come and go. I know lol I need to fix my oil leak before the big meet.

Re: Question!

Well a bump for me. It's not a rod knock if anything a small valve adjustment but it comes and goes every so often so it's not worrying me. I had took out the solenoid and cleaned the gasket that goes into the block from the solenoid it was pretty clean, after still not vtec. fixed vc leak still no vtec just fixed oil pan leak and will test it out soon. also need to check the top gasket on the solenoid to make sure its not clogged up, hoping it is and that's my problem.
Also my rev limiter is still at 6k. Why is this?

Re: Question!

Listen the 6 k rev limiter. it's because your not moving..it's not good to rev and engine up that high without any load or resistance on it.......like driving. mine does the same thing sittting still. check the wire that connects to the vtec solenoid where it plugs into the gray clip the harness pulled my wire out far enough that it was still in the clip but not touching the other connector on the other side of the clip. make sure your moving when you try to hit vtec and you are warmed up

Good to know. that's a good idea. didn't think of that one. that line is pretty thick so it should last. you might be able to twist the bar and get the bracket off the lines

So today VTEC is still not engaging I made sure the wire is plugged and it is. If my VTEC solenoid is bad would it throw a CEL?

Re: Question!

Okay I found out you can get these two CEL's with a VTEC solenoid that's not working correctly.
21 - VTEC Spool Solenoid Valve - P1253 (system malfunction)
22 - VTEC Pressure Valve - P1257, P1258, P1259 (system malfunction)
Im not getting neither of those so does this mean my gasket screen just needs to be cleaned? I cleaned the big one that's between the solenoid and the engine but I never cleaned the smaller one ontop.

Honestly i couldn't tell you for sure. but before you start throwing parts at it check craigslist and do some more searching. i made the mistake of throwing parts at cars too many times....now i search and test. i'll give you a good website to type your problem in and find good results. message me if you want it
