Just got a Prelude! Base!

Hey guys i just got a prelude 5th gen a couple months ago. Loving the car! (:
Ummm lets see i got it for $4,500 form $5,500.
It had 107k miles on it.
Its Stickshift! :D My first of course, and im treating this thing as my baby no worries!
The exterior is pretty straight!
Interior is flawless
The car is all stock!
Lets see what ive done to the car so far since i got it...
I fixed the ac, the resistor was blown.
I waxed, washed, cleaned, all that good stuff!
I love the sawblade rims and all but i just had to get the SH rims so i swapped em out. Good deal too! Hope im not being fake with those rims and my base model! haha.
Everything checked out with the car!
Oh and i adjusted the clutch a little bit because the free play was pretty high.
Thats about it for now!
Let me know what you think! (: Good deal? Haha
PICTURES!

EDIT:
I forgot to mention! Its 2001 :P

Re: Just got a Prelude! Base!

You might want to look into timing belt replacement if it hasn't been done yet. just saying. Nice Lude tho.

When i bought the car, the owner didnt tell me if the timing belt has been done or not. I don't really know when its going out or not either. I know they usually get replaced around 100k but i doubt this owner did it. Is there any visual things i can see to tell if it needs to be replaced? Or hear anything?

Re: Just got a Prelude! Base!

Welcome to the forums! Very clean ride, and pretty good mileage too. I picked my prelude up a few months ago same year, and same price actually. But mine is an SH with higher mileage than that so good find on that one. I'm currently at around 170k now but runs really strong with all of the maintenance that I have done since the original purchase. I see that your from Cali also.. what part? Also how long did you look for until you purchased your lude? I checked out a whole bunch out here, all were beaters, I had to drive 2hrs to pick mine up lol.

Re: Just got a Prelude! Base!

To my knowledge you could look for chunks missing from the belt, weak spots, or what looks like excessive wear. i'm not too sure. while your in there do the other normal replacements like water pump and tensioner.

So far no big maintenance hasn't been needed but i feel like it will be pretty soon. The car does run pretty strong though! im from the east bay. So like, Concord, Oakland, Antioch, Pittsburg. Yeah. I looked for a good maybe 2-3 weeks? and i drove everywhere. From 1 hour away to like 3 1/2 hours away. I bought this lude in Modesto so that was about 3 hours away from where i live. Honestly, i wasn't planning to buy it, i was just up in the city to look at a whole bunch, but when i saw this... It was the cleanest one that ive seen out of all of the Ludes out there and it drove amazing! Had to get it!

Haha alright thanks, i'm probably going to power hose it down soon because there is a lot of dirt all over it and then check everything out. Do that full maintenance tune up!

Re: Just got a Prelude! Base!

Careful doing that. Water on electrical=BAD DAY and probably a couple weeks after. Look into getting it steam cleaned. I'm a firm believer in doing things myself but i not comfortable with that much water under my hood.

You might want to check if you still have your resinator for your intake. if you have some free time take it out and let the car breathe. plus if you do get a aftermarket intake you'll already have the hard part done. I'll feed it to you because your new and to save some time...check your filter while your at it. Happy Luding.

Re: Just got a Prelude! Base!

I pressured washed my engine, well my dad did. If you know what your doing and know where to not hit hard or hit it at all you'll be fine. It gets all the big stuff off but all purpose cleaner with a brush will get it nice and cleaner

Re: Just got a Prelude! Base!

Last time i detailed my engine i ended getting water down in my spark plug tubes. Took me around 3 hours to get it try had to use a can of compressed air like you would use to clean out a key board for a computer.

Re: Just got a Prelude! Base!

Yeah i prefer steam cleaning..it works wonders....plus not a metric S**t ton of water in your engine bay.

If you never used a pressure washer on your engine bay then i'd say an expirement with your Lude is not the time...Just What i think....but i ain't gonna tell you what to do but if it was me i'd get some engine degreaser or engine brite and spray it on let sit for a minute or 2 then spray off. DON"T do this to a hot engine or a running engine and wait about 20 minutes to an hour before starting your car and driving after you use it.

Just stick to steam cleaning or engine brite and keep it away from electrical. make sure you don't do it on concrete or pavement because it'll leave a mark when you wash it off. it works wonders tho. Just use common sense when spraying things and you should be fine.

Re: Just got a Prelude! Base!

Welcome to the site!

Dude,

Last year I bought the exact same model, year, color, mileage AND price (was $4200). Except it was an auto with rebuilt transmission (yeah, I hated the transmission, so I had to total it.. didn't mean to though, was just being dumb).

Timing belt had been done on it though. With confirmed paperwork. If you got no paperwork, bust out that user's manual and do all the recommended maintenance - can save you lots of headaches (and money pits) in the long run.

If your timing belt goes, so will your engine and you will have regrets for the rest of your prelude times. H22's are too nice to go to waste at such a young age.

My advice: Since you think it hasn't been done, or even if it has been, do it anyway. To check it, you'd have to tear down the whole engine to get to it (which is why labor costs are so high if you don't know how to do it yourself) and the belt and water pump are comparatively mad cheap.

Hope that helps,

Sz
