Just got a 2000 Prelude (Base)

Snagged it for 4000, (Talked him down from 5300).. Well, it looks like a panels been replaced, and it's been completely painted, but besides that, everything seems good.

Few questions:

-The valve cover is extremely scratched up. I want to paint it.. If I take it off, does it have to be torqued back down with a torque wrench?

-Sometimes when I get in the car, it makes a weird buzz/hum sound, and the pitch shifts upward for about 5 seconds. I have NO clue what it is..

-One of the fogs was SCREWED in, from the front, and zip tied on the back... (Like wtf.. WHO mistreats a prelude like that?!?.) And for some reason, the right headlight wire is missing (The black thing with 3 prongs, along with the wires..) This is all on the side that probably got hit.. (With the panel replaced)..

Anyways, I'm about to take the front bumper off to try and get these fogs wired back up... (or turn signals, Idek..)

here's some pics of what I'm working with:

This is my first post by the way, so I hope to enjoy this new community! (a step up from the CB7 ;)

(Sorry!, working on projectors..)

F*** the guy or shop that did this... Everything else looks straight though.. Interior/trunk was flawless, no mods to the exhaust/intake/engine whatsoever... AC works, only 100k miles.. I guess I got a good deal. All stock besides HIDs.. I like the car, and I needed one bad.

Lol I've never seen that before ghetto. Anyways. Yes if you take off the valve cover it will need to be torqued down to spec, also since the gasket is most likely original that will be needing replacement. The buzzing sound idk, maybe try a full tune up. Spark plugs, wires, etc.

Re: Just got a 2000 Prelude (Base)

It only does this when the car's off.. It sounds like it's coming from the master brake cylinder? It's been doing it like every 5 minutes.. even with the key out.

Welcome there, friend. I think I know what that buzzing sound you're talking about because I think mine's made it before, but not for long periods of time. I have never figured out what it is.

Re: Just got a 2000 Prelude (Base)

My old CB7 (93 Accord) made something similar.. It had something to do with the brakes.. it always would do it on a cold start once I got up to about 5mph.. It like prepares the brakes or something.. I'm not sure.. It's kind of scary when you're working on your car, and it's all quite ~ and out of know where, BuHSSSSSSSS

Re: Just got a 2000 Prelude (Base)

Take the valve cover off...sand it a little and put a new gasket on. don't get any oil on it before you try to put it on. As far as torgue specs? Tight but not balls to the wall tight. just snug it up and go and check every nut after you think it's on good. Yeah that little piece under the turn signal didn't look good at all. Wood screws shouldn't be used on cars.......all though i've done it once or twice.

Re: Just got a 2000 Prelude (Base)

Overall the car looks clean man. Rofl at the 2 screws haha who the hell does that to a prelude? As far as the valve cover goes, you could always have it powder coated a different color. And like previous poster said make sure to pick up a valve cover gasket since your probably sitting on the original one.

Grats on the ride and welcome to the forum!

I agree with not balls to the wall tight lol, but if you don't own a torque wrench you should really go invest into one. Prevents snapping bolts or tightening them too loose.

Re: Just got a 2000 Prelude (Base)

Technically speaking there is a torque spec for everything the screws for the radio, screws for center console, and even screws that hold the inside door lever assembly. now how many people use torque specs? depends on what it is. unless it's something like lugnuts or brake parts most of the time what it feels like to get off is what it should be on. but you probably should have a torque wrench but you don't see me running out and buying one. haha

Hope you fix that wiring, hope it's not a PITA.

Everyone needs a prelude! Come on, now

I kinda agree. I would only drop it and work the exterior and interior as much as possible (since it's a rather old car, some components probably aren't exactly in tip-top shape. I love making mine look as new and clean as possible - removing dents, washing all the time, buffing, waxing, all that aesthetic stuff. Car's badass stock anyway).

Also, when anything goes, replace with aftermarket. Get the expensive stuff.. that's got good reviews of course :)
Lots of R&D behind OEM parts, so you want the best aftermarket stuff out there (if you can afford it). Otherwise, OEM it.
Knockoffs sometimes work and lots of times it's a gamble 'cause some people have luck with 'em, others don't. Kinda like when you pick a girl up at a bar. She could be worth your time and effort (oh, and your money), but if she's not, you gotta start all over :p

The noise you are hearing is the fuel vapor cannister purging. My 2000SH & 2000 Civic EX both do this. It almost sounds like a balloon deflating or an animal crying underneath a towel.

As for the valve cover torque It is 8.3ft/lb, and the torque sequence is below...

Helpful info man. I just want to add something..

Not trying to be a dick, but just to clarify, it's ft-lbf. Torque is expressed in units of force times distance (it's just the wrench's overall tangential force on the nut times the radial distance from the center of the nut).

it is the purge valve, that releases pressure. I believe this sound only happens after it is driven correct?

Re: Just got a 2000 Prelude (Base)

I got cha. So I'm putting on some tint right now, and I've come to the back windshield.. I have put on tint many times before, but I need to remove this 3rd brake light. I'm guessing I do this from the trunk, but I don't see any obvious bolts that I need to unscrew to get this thing off. Any pointers?

Here's a pic :D

EDIT: I see 2 black clips from under the trunk.. I'm guessing these are connected to the 3rd brake light housing.. But where's the front connected

EDIT2: Wow.. I got id xD .. I just pushed it and it popped out. -_- easiest ever

My 01 SH makes the same sound. Cant figure it out, but it doesn't seem to be causing any issues. Ive had my 01 Lude for a little over 3 years, still buzzing... (I have heard this from other Luders in the past as well.)
