Couple questions.

First off. I just took my header cover off and like I was expecting, my header is pretty ugly. Is it safe to leave the cover off? Also, is there any TLC I can do to buff up my header? I'm also wanting to paint my head cover. Is there anything I should watch out for when taking it off? Do I have to replace anything? Any other words of advice?

Re: Couple questions.

might want to replace the valve cover gasket, you could also wrap the header

Re: Couple questions.

I don't know how much wrap you need...you would have to figure that out yourself. you can use paint but only use one coat on the header because when it heats up and expands it'll crack if you add to many layers. you can also paint or leave the heatshield off. your choice. make sure you clean up whatever you do paint before spraying anything.

Re: Couple questions.

Leaving the heatsheild off can increase your under hood temps which is never good. I wouldn't leave it off without heat wrapping it mainly cause it's rusty and ugly. Im planning on heat wrapping my stock header soon. My friend was able to wrap his ebay header with 11 feet of heat wrap. They sell a ton of it on ebay cheap 15ft roll for about ten bucks, also comes in tan, white and black colors. I would buy a 20ft roll to be on the safe side. You will also need some metal zip ties they sell them on ebay too. Taking off the header would be easier and replace the header gasket while your at it. Painting your heat sheild can easily be done, just get some high heat temp paint and spray it on there. Buffing or making the header itself pretty is a hit or miss, some people are able to paint theirs and no problems but some just chip away. You would need to sand blast it anyways, Id go with the two options above.

Re: Couple questions.

Header wrap is kinda like the heat sheild that comes with our cars. It keeps in heat and brings down under hood temps.

Re: Couple questions.

Clean up the heat shield and paint it with high temp paint. I used Rustoleum High Heat color Flat Aluminum and painted the hardware (3 bolts) with another brand of high temp paint black. It turned out real nice and clean.

Got the heat shield painted, just waiting on it to dry over night so I can install it. Do you guys think it'll be ok if I install it after just one night to dry?

How long does it say to let it dry on the can? I think it would be fine if not just install it the next day.

Re: Couple questions.

That's the tricky part. It says it should be dry to the touch in 20 minutes, and able to be handled in an hour. So I've passed that stage. But then it also reads, "Allow up to 7 days to cure." So I'm not sure if that means I have to leave it off my car for a week or what. But here's some pics. I put it on just to see how it looks. Now it's just chillin' in my garage waiting to cure, I guess?

Re: Couple questions.

Haha yeah I do. Did you replace your valve cover gasket when you painted your head? I can't buy one at the AutoZone here. They have to ship it and I don't know if I can wait to get it in. I'm off wednesday and thursday and have work at 4 on friday. They said it took two days to ship. So could I paint it tomorrow and let it sit until it gets here? Or do you really need to wait 7 days for the paint to cure?

Re: Couple questions.

I don't think you need to wait man. But also mine isnt painted its polished . I didn't put a new gasket in because mine was fine and not leaking. Look up the DIY by projectprelude95 it's a pretty good step by step for your valve cover.

Just remember that asking stupid questions prevents you from making stupid (and expensive) mistakes. Not saying your questions are stupid but don't be afraid to ask...and use the search function! I learned a ton by searching my questions, like how to install Sh door lights in a Base model!!

It wasn't leaking previously and just inspect it well. If its missing pieces of the seal it's trash. It's better to replace man. Is that the only parts store Arround you?

Re: Couple questions.

I would wait those 7 days not waiting for it to cure can mess it up. Remember that shield gets crazy hot and if it's not completely done it will crack the paint and you'd have to start all over again. The VC gasket, depends is it original? never changed? If so then I'd just replace it, you risk it leaking when reusing such a old gasket.

Re: Couple questions.

I'm not sure if it's been replaced or not. And I can't take off the head to check either because if I end needing to replace it, I'll have to wait for it to ship and I have work on Friday. How hot does the head get compared to the heat shield? Could I let it cure for 2 days and be okay?

Re: Couple questions.

1 roll of header wrap is more than enough. (i only used half the roll, but not sure what the overall length of it was)

I chose to wet sand the header down, clean, and paint (if you are going to paint it)

I agree with Hunter - more than 1 coat will crack and flake off

I've painted the heat shield alone as well - same issue with multiple coats

If you were to leave the heat shield off without header wrap, you won't notice any difference in the bay temps....

replace the downpipe to header gaskets and the gasket between the header and the head

Re: Couple questions.

So I should only do one coat on both the heat shield and the valve cover? I put like 3 on the heat shield, all thin coats though.

Re: Couple questions.

That might go either way. if your lucky it won't crack, if your not lucky it will. usually try to do it in one nice coat. Valve cover you can do multiple coats but if you know how to use a spray can and got decent paint one coat with a touch coat should be enough
