Car running in limp mode

So this is a continuation of a previous thread that just lost it's way. 1999 base model standard. Everything was going great with this ride even with over 200k on the clock. this past wednesday it was feeling sluggish on my drive home, sounded like it was bellowing almost sounding like getting into vtec and had really poor acceleration. On the drive back up to work it ran like a top that morning then maybe 5 mins into my drive it started up again. Same sound, same poor acceleration. On my drive back home that same say, i got maybe two miles from work and it's really nasty now, almost no acceleration and i can't get faster than 60mph downhill. Got progressively worse as i drove and eventually shut down on me. Engine didn't overheat but exhaust was smokin anything that was on or near it. Pushed to gas station and wouldn't start back up. Cooled off for maybe an hour then started right back up like no problem?! limped it the rest of the way home, just as nasty clackin and slow as it did when it shut down on me. Went straight after EGR valve, plunger moved plenty freely but i cleaned it anyway since i had it off. Swapped plugs to find AUTOLITES in there?!? That aside it's got fresh densos last night, put it back together and started up, still missing as RPMs climb and once it hits 3k it just loses everything and bogs down to idle. Got home today and all is well, ran and ramped up rpm past 3k no problem. test drove and after got to temp it started same thing, up to 3k then bogs down, and poor acceleration.

Re: Car running in limp mode

checked resistance on my crank/TDC sensors and they ohmed out within spec. I'm about to test ignition module cuz after that the troubleshoot tree is pointing me to the ECM, and don't EVEN want to think about that.

Mine had the same exact problem and i had to get a new distributor. once it got up to temp the it would mess up. $300 down the hole. haha

Re: Car running in limp mode

anybody have experience with their ignition module goin nuts? i've seen many a module work okay until they start to warm up and then get hot and car/truck runs like poop. that's on domestics though, this is the first jap ride i've owned with this kind of engine, the other was a rotary.

I made a thread similair to this and somebody said that could be bad. i'm pretty sure it's in the distributor.

Re: Car running in limp mode

hrmm, got home and test drove, same problem of course, stumbling and poor acceleration up to 3k rpm, still leaning towards ignition module but i pulled the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and car seemed to do better, still had some hesitation and dropped rmp when i pushed it to maybe 3500rpm. thinkin that kind of cancels the possible problem with pressure regulator. not to mention i CANT get this fckn thing to throw a code?!?! so i'm bout to take a solid little drive, just hope it doesn't strand my ass.

Re: Car running in limp mode

CANT get this thing to throw a code, so LONG test drive and after a while with a steady higher speed and load, it eventually got to where it was just draggin balls and shut down on me. let it cool off maybe 30ish minutes, started right back up and drove rest of the way home. still bumping against 3k rpm and bogging back down. SO! tomorrow i'm down to swapping cap/rotor and probably fuel pres regulator, if i can get it shut down on me again then i guess i'll spring for ignition module, if timing is supposed to change at 3k and ISNT CHANGING? he's gotta have some part in it.

Re: Car running in limp mode

so got cap/rotor/ignition module, decided to get the ol' valve adjustment out of the way since i was going to be out there into it. Got the valve cover off and in the process of turning over the engine, saw that my exhaust valve cam had the BOLT BACKED OFF AT LEAST A QUARTER INCH?!?! so that at least lets me know where the jingle that's been in the engine since i bought the car was coming from. Not to mention that with that cam just walking its ass off in turn walking the belt some one edge of the timing belt has a decent amount of CRAP rubbed off. SO i'm getting this done and swap cap/rotor/module and see what i'm left with.

Re: Car running in limp mode

Hunter and white Id say have nailed it, when i first started dating my ex wife she had a 93 lude, was doing the same thing when I met her.. cold would run.. warms up starts crapping out till nothing. Little forum searching pointed to the distributer per symtoms.. replaced.. ran like a charm.
