Red Programming Key

(Please read all the way through) Ok when I first bought my lude the dealer said he got it from an auction and didnt know anything about it before he bought it. Luckily nothing was wrong with it and sold it to me with vehicle reports. He gave me this red key plus a black key without explaining anything what the red key does. I automatically assumed it was some kind of important master spare key and put it away. When I got home I used the red key to see if it started the engine and it didnt. I later researched that it will basically make the car useless if I used it to try and start the car with it so I panicked and used my black key and to my surprise.. IT STARTED!! Now my question is. What did the previous owner do to make that possible? Sorry if it seems like a n00b question but I have searched google, and in my opinion no question is n00b

Re: Red Programming Key

i just registered on here im the noob lol, but i have never heard of anything like that being stock especially considering your lude is some years old thats odd, maybe its something the previous owner got installed and the guy you bought it off of turned it off such as keyless entry, look for a computer for something that would do with ignition or any lock for that matter, the computer that corresponds may have the function writtin on it, if there is a computer requirement for whatever it does

Re: Red Programming Key

Yes the red key is the master programming key, it came on 97+ preludes, and some acura's
You need it to make new keys at the dealer so put it up and dont lose it.

Re: Red Programming Key

Yes but my question is how was I able to start my lude after trying to use it to start the ignition? I heard it was supposed to erase all the programming or something when used?

Re: Red Programming Key

Kinda same situation as me...except I got the car and there was no red key and only one black key. Went to Honda and they said I needed that key otherwise I can't make new keys and that will cost about $600 with tax so I'm hoping I don't lose my key lol. Honda dude did say that if you tried starting your cars THREE times it'll disable the whole car and will cost alot to get it back up. Hope this helps.

Oh I see said the blind man. Lol. Wonder why it's so damn expensive to make a new red key. That's like new camshafts right there!

ONLY THE 1997's came with a red key. The 1998-2001 DID NOT.

I have a 2001 with the red key still in its blister pack. How much other misinformation are you spreading?

Every 5th gen lude has a built in security system. You can only start the cars with their own keys. Can't jam a screwdriver in, can't hotwire, can't push start without proper key. Ever notice the green light on the dash blink after you shut off the ignition? That's the immobilizer system. All of our keys have a microchip in them that communicates with a receiver in the car. If they don't match up, no spark.

Correct is he, who said the red key, is for making new ones. It contains the code that matches the immobilizer system in your car. If you've got yours, don't lose it. If you don't, then by god, better hope you never need it.

Re: Red Programming Key

My 2000 did not come with a red key (but I bought it used). I have bought 'T5' keys that worked without programming (a T5 key emulates a 'master key'). I was told by a Master Honda Technician with 28 years experience at my local Honda dealer, that only 1997s came with a red key, and in '98 the red key was no longer needed when the immobilizer system was introduced on the Accord.

Re: Red Programming Key

Then why would the dealer I bought it from give me a red key? And why does my lude have the immobilizer light? It opens all locks but wont start the engine so its deffinately NOT a "valet" key. Anyway this isn't going anywhere. Lol.
