Got an automatic '98...tranny cooler thought?

Any thoughts/suggestions about a transmission cooler for my automatic '98 Prelude?

We need more info than just that. Why do you want one? what makes you think you need one? is it just because you want one? Is there a problem with your tranny? give us some more info man. haha

Just concerned about many of these Honda under-engineered automatic transmissions that prematurely fail...many due to insufficient fluid flow that burns up the fluid...then the tranny...thoughts?

I've heard that coolers can help "prolong" the life of the auto tranny, but eventually, it will die. The ****-tronic is one of the worst transmissions I've ever dealt with, I recommend saving up for a 5-speed.

Ever stop and consider that the standard setup runs trans fluid through the radiator to keep it cool? Or to warm it up to operating temperature in cold climates?

Got any specific recommendation on which 5-sp to get? Conservative estimate on cost (w/ installation charge breakout)?...any other recommended tips (mostly stock '98 base ~107K mileage)?

true as that maybe, the stock tranny cooler is entirely to inefficient. a standalone cooler will help prolong the life of your tranny. if you're already at 107k (that's where i'm at on my '00 automatic) and haven't experienced any problems then you don't have one of the bad trannies. still, that doesn't mean it won't die on you prematurely. but as long as you've been changing the fluid every 15k miles or so, you should be good. if you're really worried about it, they're not all that expensive; if you have the funds i would recommend it while you save up for the swap. i've been contemplating getting one. i've noticed my shifts are getting softer of the past year or so...

either the 4th or 5th gen vtec trannies will be your best bet. even an h23 tranny will work but you won't stay in vtec from 1st to 2nd. that's what i went with but i didn't care, i got it for REALLY cheep from a friend. as for the cost, it can vary widely. i managed to find all the parts for 300 bucks. i've heard people getting all the parts for around 7-800. sometimes as low as 6 or as much as a grand. to install it all i've heard estimates of 800-1200. i got an estimate of 800 from someone a very trustworthy mechanic that i did business with very regularly.

My '97 automatic is still running pretty strong with 143k miles. I just got it in November, and got a tranny servicing yesterday, and it feels great, but i'm still strongly contemplating the tranny cooler just to be safe.

Should i still fear the premature failure, or am I being overly-concerned?

Sorry for reviving an old thread, guys.

Re: Got an automatic '98...tranny cooler thought?

Re-viving old threads is not a bad thing. Especially when it comes to that tired old subject of the 5th gen auto tragic tranny. Tired old to the long termers.... to new owners, new concerns. But you didn't start the #2474th thread asking that question.
Thank you!!!

Tranny coolers are good for that tranny. But getting one that is too large will not allow for proper warm up of the fluid. If you drive on the highway a lot, say long trips for hours at a time, big works best. But for general commuting and 30 minute highway trips etc a mid sized cooler is best.

Search for 'accord tranny failure' threads for specific ideas..'odyssey tranny failure' also.
