Auto tranny.

Im planning on 5 speed swap sometime this year most likely christmas time. So Im stuck with my auto tranny for a while unless it decides to fail on me in between then. It struggles from 1st to 2nd already :( But what kinda makes me mad is when it's in sport's shift mode im in 2nd and I press the pedal all the way down and it barely even accelerates it feels like Im in 4th trying to go faster. But when I put it into automatic I press down the pedal down all the way and it pulls hard and accelerates fast. Why is that?

Re: Auto tranny.

2nd gear in the autos suck. when you put in normal D and you push the pedal to the floor does it drop down to 1st?

Re: Auto tranny.

Test relays? Whats that??
And I don't know I'll have to pay attention next time but in sports shift mode it's bad to drop from 2nd to first correct?

Re: Auto tranny.

i guess it depends on the condition of your tranny. i've done it in mine with out any problems. i'm only at 106k and my tranny is still holding pretty strong when compared to many of the other auto trannys on preludes. it won't let you do it if you're above 31mph anyways. and in just regular D, it typically won't really do it if you've above about 25-28. just remember how much our 2nd gear sucks. if you ever really watch speed your at when you max out 2nd gear, it's around 70mph. on the 5spds i want to say it like 60.

Re: Auto tranny.

Other then it struggling from 1st to 2nd it's in decent condtion. 142K miles on the tranny. Could I redline in 1st gear? I probably wont do so but I always wondered lol. And how do our 2nd gears suck? It not accelerating fast?

Re: Auto tranny.

yeah, you can redline 1st. i wouldn't be doing it every day of course. 2nd gear sucks because it's to wide. at least until you get to about 4k. the automatics only have 4 gears. in order to make the car remotely drivable/practical with such a high redline you have to widen the gears slightly compared to the 5spd. IMO if a motor has more then a 6k redline, it should require 5 gears.

Re: Auto tranny.

Alrighty thanks yeah I never run my car hard but sometimes I like to have some fun lol. Ohh okay I see, is that why when I floor it in 2nd my RPM's climb up crazy slow and I barley even pick up speed?

Re: Auto tranny.

It can take abuse, but not constant abuse. So save the power/VTEC for when you really need it. How many miles are on the car?

Re: Auto tranny.

Yeah I hit VTEC maybe weekly but most of the time every two weeks. 142k on the car.

Re: Auto tranny.

I mean, people always say, "Vtec once a day keeps the smoke away" I mean, if you're on it all the time, I don't care if its a manual or an auto, on a 11-15 year old car, eventually you're going to break something. If it starts doing anything really weird, take a video and post it in the 5th gen auto failure guide, and then people like Beaker and I can look at it and help you with it(and if it happens to someone else, and they go there, BOOM they've got an answer without even asking a question).
