honda keys

i have a 97 prelude base model, it only came with one key and no fob. does anyone know if the key has to be one of them chipped keys? or can i go to a hardware store and just make a copy? i heard that the 97-01 has to be one of them chipped keys and if you go and just make a copy with a regular key, it wont start the car. any advice?

Re: honda keys

If you want the key to start the car, you need a Honda key. However there have been people that have been able to order a cheaper version of the chipped key online and had a dealer program that at half the cost.

To make a copy of your master key - you need the red key. Now SOME dealerships have a special tool/computer that can copy keys without the red key - but most dealers don't have it.

The FOB is just the little door unlock/lock bs thing. You should be able to get one from your local dealer still.

Plenty of threads on this subject on both here and preludepower. Search away.

Re: honda keys

The transducer in the master key makes it so that if the chipped key is within proximity of the starter, you can crank it. Otherwise, it won't start.

Hope it doesn't cost ya much, but at least we got that extra safety feature considering the age of our cars..

Re: honda keys

I believe it's called a "T5 key" but don't hold me to that.

The red key is just what it sounds like - a solid red gripped key for your car. It's used to program new keys.

You need the red key for the dealer to program any new keys.

If you do not have the red key, there is a special computer/tool that SOME dealers have that can still program the new key. But again- very few dealers have this and you would have to check first.

Research. there is plenty of info out there on this.

Here is the REAL DEAL! I just went through this whole process with my 2001 Prelude SH.

I do not have the red key.
Option #1
Every Honda dealer can PROGRAM from your key that starts the car. The key you will need has to have a T5 Chip in it. The dealer will change approx 50-60$ to PROGRAM any number of keys to your car. They will hook up an OBD to your car and "flash" the ECU so it reads and PROGRAMS that key/transponder "chip". These keys you get PROGRAMED will all be considered MASTER KEYS.

I bought some keys off of Ebay with the transponder and had the dealer program the two keys I got from my black Honda key....not the red key. The red key is need if you have no other MASTER KEYS.

OPTION #2
Go to ACE, LOWES, or Home Depot and you can buy their key for about $40 and they will CLONE the key to the key you have that works. You can not take an Ebay Transponder key to any of these locations for them to clone or program. You have to buy their key so they can clone it.

All in all, Cloning a key is very different than Programming a key. Either way both will start and unlock a vehicle but the ECU will not recognize a cloned key as a master key!

My suggestion is to buy a couple keys off of ebay with the T5 Transponder Chip and has the "H" logo on them. Go to a Honda dealership and have them PROGRAM it. It should take about 1 hour of labor. Each dealership will charge a different amount. Shop Around.

There you go!
Jim

The dealer basically copied the code from the key you used to the new key from the vin. An easy process taking less than 5 min. Making a key a Master Key takes about an hour.
