Rod knock?

I have a 2001 Prelude with 142k miles. I notice when I start the car about a minute running a hear a small sound what seems to be a "rod knocking" sound, It does it for about a minute or two then goes away and doesn't come back at all. Ill turn it off and doesn't do it. So seems to only do it when it's first started. Also while it is doing the noise I rev the car and the noise doesn't get louder at all. Normal symptoms of a older engine or should I be worried?

Re: Rod knock?

If you give it a little gas when you hear it, does the sound go away or can you still hear it? Does it only do it at idle on a cold engine? Or does it possibly come back when sitting idle for a while for a short period? Is it coming from the engine or from the timing belt side? Have you replaced your timing belt/tensioner? Could be belt slap.

Re: Rod knock?

When I give it some gas I can't hear it. It defiantly doesn't get louder where it over powers the engine noise. And whenever it does it it's at idle I can't hear it from the inside of the car. Only cold engine once it warms up I can turn the car off and back on and it doesn't come back. I;ve left it to idle 10 minutes after it goes away and it doesn't come back. I can't tell it sounds like the engine, the previous owner got the timing belt replaced about a year or two ago.

Re: Rod knock?

When the timing belt was replaced did they use the auto tensioner? it sounds like the problem i was having with my timing belt. The auto tensioner took a crap on me only after a few months. Thats why i swapped to the h23 manual tensioner. When your engine is cold before you start it, remove the upper timing belt cover and take a peek at the belt right after you start it. My belt was slapping around until it warmed up then it was not as bad.

Re: Rod knock?

How do I remove the cover? Also if my belt is slapping around how do I fix that?

Re: Rod knock?

If you're belt is slapping (loose), you fix it by replacing the tensioner and performing a timing belt job! :)

Re: Rod knock?

Its alot cheaper than an engine lol. Remove the valve cover which should be about 8 bolts and the upper timing cover should have 2 or 3 bolts iirc. Then bolt down the valve cover and start your car. Remember to replace valve cover gasket or it could leak.

Re: Rod knock?

Ahh okay dang I was hoping I could do that without taking off the valve cover. But I need to anways it's leaking in the timing belt area anyways
