Crappy cold start transmission?

So just lately my transmissions been acting funny. When I first start the car and drive, my car gives me a lot of hesitation when shifting into second. Sometimes it waits a second to shift, other times it slams in to gear really hard. Also, when I come to a stop and the car downshifts from third, then quickly over second and down to first, the car scoots forward and has that same type of hesitation. But after about 5-10 minutes of driving, it's back to smooth sailing. I DO have an automatic but it's been rebuilt. I tried driving it in both tiptronic and regular automatic and it does the same thing in both cases. Any ideas? Do I need a tune up? Timing belt? Transmission fluid?

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

Sounds like your transmission is on it's way to failure. Mine slips from 1st to 2nd. You can try checking the solenoids and cleaning them or replacing them if they are bad. Check the tranny fluid make sure it's good. If everything is good then I hate to say it you but your tranny is going to give out.

Gah. It already went out once. It didn't do this the first time either. How do I go about check the solenoids?

Yeah once it goes out it's almost certain it will give out again much earlier. With a ohm meter you unplug it and test it, I can email you the chapter of shop manual that explains how to test them replace them and how to find them inside your bay. Just PM your email.

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

The thing that strikes me as odd, however, is the fact that if I turn my car on and let it warm up for like 5 minutes or so, it runs smooth. Why would that be my transmission?

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

Mine did fine warmed up then started to do it all the time. Just keep an eye out for it and see if it worsens or takes longer to go away.

Is there anyway to prevent further damage though?

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

Don't run your car hard, Some people say using the sports shift mode ruins the tranny some say it doesn't I wouldn't use it if I were you, only reason I use is it cause my 5spd swap is coming soon. If you do decide to use it shift at 3k. Change your tranny fluid and don't flush it.

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

I've shifted it a 3k nearly every time I drive. But I'll continue to do it and see if that helps.

I talked to my parents about getting a 5 speed swap and they don't understand why my transmission goes out so quickly and why swapping a 5 speed would be any better or last any longer. Anyone have a good answer?

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

I have but it still doesn't answer the question as to why a 5 speed swap is necessary. They think that the 5 speed transmission will break just like my auto one did.

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

Don't worry my dad's the same way, he insists the tranny is fine and a rebuilt will make it last another 100k miles like it did before but oh well. Show them facts of tranny failings and how Honda basically used our Preludes as a guinea pig on the whole sports shift transmissions and turned out to be a crappy ass tranny. If your tranny failed, got rebuilt and is already starting to fail gain then that should be a perfect sign time for 5spd swap lol. And no the 5spd will not fail like your auto tranny.

And sorry on the late email of the manual Im trying to compress it to email it.

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

Tell them you will save money in the long run by not having to replace the tranny ever so often and it will be more pleasing to drive, save gas.

Re: Crappy cold start transmission?

Honda is a really great company. They build great engines and great manual transmissions but sorry honda your automatics have serious issues and I will not get sucked into that money pit ever again. I'm sure it is between $2500 and $3000 for a rebuilt transmission. That is crazy. A manual is much more heavy duty and you can change the clutch instead of the transmission when it wears out.
