Heat shield Question

I've seen people that put headers on not replace the heat shield. I was wondering if I remove the stock heat shield from the stock heads if this will cause any damage such as blistering my paint on the hood or melting any wires/hoses near them. I don't think it would since people leave open headers i just wasn't sure if those were specifically treated to be open.

In short, if i remove the stock heat shield off the front from the stock exhaust system will it cause damage?

Re: Heat shield Question

Noppeee, just do it.
Plus it'll save you the headache if that ever starts rattling (which is only a matter of time before it starts happening) of where the rattling is coming from.

Re: Heat shield Question

You'll be fine. You can remove the header, clean it up and paint it like I did (old pic)

or keep on top of wetsanding it...

This is what the header typically looks like under the heat shield

Not worth chrome plating a stock header. Looks good - but take a look at the price of having it done, on a part that usually gets replaced...

No not the actual headers that would be stupid. I mean the heat shield. Okay that sounds stupid too but I swear it looks sweet haha

Re: Heat shield Question

It won't damage paint or anything. But if you do get to much heat though you can also heat cloth/tape wrap it

Re: Heat shield Question

Travis, You do know that you can just polish it and get the same result for a fraction of the price - right?

Polishing is usually what people do to the heat shields. Plating is ridiculously expensive.

Re: Heat shield Question

Yeah I would too if I had stock headers. His engine bay is so clean. If he did a little wire tuck it would be hotter then two fat people in a small closet.

Re: Heat shield Question

Ok, thanks again for the feed back on the question. So today I took off the shield and sanded up the stock headers, then shot them with some white heat paint I had. I hit the battery tie down too, just to even out the colour. And here are the before and after pics since we all love those.

Whatcha guys think?

Re: Heat shield Question

Nice job man.

Hopefully you didn't put on too many coats - otherwise it may chip off once heated and the header expands.

Did you do some heat cycles between coats so one layer can expand etc? Or only do 1 coat?

My silver header was just 1 coat, lasted around 6 months before some thinner coated areas showed through.

Re: Heat shield Question

Thanks and I only did one coat but i put it on pretty thick. I was afraid of that, the header expanding. I've never painted one so I'm not to sure what to expect and I havent heated it up yet...so we'll see when I drive it tomorrow

What temperature is the paint rated for? I hope it doesn't start cracking and falling off the first time you run it! It looks good otherwise.
