2 ludes but can only save one. decision decision.

Ok 5th gen owners i have a major decision on my hands:

I currently own a 98 nordic mist prelude. it is an automatic and the transmission just gave out. i just purchased a blackhawk pearl 2001 prelude that has a 5 speed trans etc. but the motor has been pulled because it had blown. it is a complete car minus the long block. and my 98 is also complete minus the trans.

now i can only afford to own one car since I'm not exactly rich or anything so one will be parted out. anyway, my 98 is registered and tagged in texas but i live in florida but since my dad is military i still have an id and military sticker which allows me to still have the texas tag and title with no issues, however that will expire in october and cost me $600 then to register. now the 2001 is registered here in florida where i currently reside and it will cost me $500 for me to register it under my name and get a tag, on top of buying it for $800.

my question is, should i swap the 5 speed parts to my 98, or should i just swap my motor into the 2001?

i mean both cars have their ups and downs and some considerations to take account of, but they can be swapped from each other. but if you were to choose would you do a 5speed swap or a motor swap. all expenses need to be considered.

^^^ I second that I went from a 01 to a 98 and Im hating if but had to....In the end you will kick your self for not taking the newer car if you decide to go with your old one

I see, but what are the reasons why you liked the 01,better? Besides being a newer model.

Re: 2 ludes but can only save one. decision decision.

It is the last year of the prelude. It is already a 5speed(so no dash diving to swap the motor. I would swap the motor into the 01 for sure before I did a 5spd swap on the 98. Plus the 01 is worth more than the 98.

Idk if you had it yet or not but the older models had the ignition problem, and yeah the newer one is worth more

Keep the 01, the 98 didnt have a changeable in cabin filter. And swapping the motor wont be that bad.

well lets just say the 01 is "riced" out but things can be swapped out:
altezza lights
air damns on the fenders
chicken wire in place of the front grill and bumper space

as far as paint and body, they both look the same. my 98 just has a few more chips up front from driving it from texas to florida

Which one has more rust and more aftermarket stuff on it? I'd say 01 cause it is a 5speed already an it would be so much easier to to switch engines then do a 5speed swap. Like you said you can just swap the "riced" out things on it too then it will be perfect.

Re: 2 ludes but can only save one. decision decision.

I agree with the 01. I'm all about black on a lude, and the dash situation said above is worth not having the head aches. 01 was the last year too remember. Stuff can always be "de-riced". Two cars means u probably have every part that u could ever need!

If conditions are about the same I'd opt for the newer car.

Go with the 01.

When looking at doing a 5spd swap or a motor swap - the motor swap is less of a headache....

Re: 2 ludes but can only save one. decision decision.

I'd say go with the '01. It's newer. It has a 5speed already. The motor swap would be less stressful and maybe even cheaper than the transmission swap. Plus it's newer, so I'm assuming the car has less miles? It's worth more. But I would also take things in to consideration such as the body. Is one cleaner than the other? Any damage?

well my 98 is cleaner because it doesnt have the fenders with air dams and it doesn't have those stupid altezza lights but like i said i can swap those.

Re: 2 ludes but can only save one. decision decision.

If it's something easy like swapping the tails, then I'd definitely go with the '01. I have an auto '97 that'd I'd kill to have swapped with a 5 speed. :/

jdm98lude is infamous around these parts
Re: 2 ludes but can only save one. decision decision.

You could even swap the fenders after painting, no? Id stick with the 01. I have a 98 and its got little problems constantly. Nothing major but annoying 30 bucks here and there lol. Also, which one has less miles? Either way youll be using the same motor but all the other parts will last longer.

Lastly, the 01 like everyone else said, was the last year they made em. All the little kinks are worked out.

what part of Florida are you in? I might be down to pick up whatever shell you decide to not keep... I have a 4th gen H22 and I wanted to swap the motor/tranny into a 5th gen shell :)
