mishimoto radiator

Just installed my new mishimoto radiator to replace my leaking OEM one, after 11 years of service I guess I can't complain.

Figured some people have already done this but doing a few searches didn't pull up everything so might as well combine allot of it, and show what I ran into while installing.

Fist off if you have an SH like me (or an automatic) you need to drop by AutoZone and grab the $40ish universal transmission cooler, and if you have a nice long flexible funnel grab a quart of ATF so you can top off your ATTS unit after you lose a bit of fluid from swapping coolers, if you don't have the funnel I suggest grabbing the small needle nose vice grips to clamp off the rubber hose close to the old radiator before removing them to minimize fluid loss (I recommend this anyways but it's more vital to people not able to top off their ATTS unit.)

The transmission cooler, I plan on putting it between the radiator and the condenser but I need to find a good way to run the hoses, I might notch the sheet metal next to the radiator on the right side or grab longer hose, haven’t decided yet hell I could make hard line to reroute them but I’ll figure out the safest reliable thing and explain it soon.

Now on my Lude (01 SH) I had to cut my mounts, just a small corner to keep them from coming in contact with the radiator, IDK if it’s an SH thing or an automatic radiator mount thing. Either way it’s very minimal and could be done with just a file if need be.

Other than that it was very smooth sailing everything bolts up and hooks up just as it came out.

Writing this in between classes so more to come including pics...

Re: mishimoto radiator

Very nice choice and good work on the install. I have a non SH manual and it's a 4th gen. I didn't have to modify my mounts. So, I'm not sure which is making ours different.

I've heard their fan shroud kit isn't needed or the best. Hear say of course, but this is from a trusted race shop here in Dallas. Anyhow, I didn't go with their fan shroud kit or the ebay special. I can vouch for the Spal fan being excellent and worth the money.

there is no fan shroud kits for 4th gens

I have that kit and theyre much more effective than stock ones!
+ you have to have slim fans if you want decent header

Re: mishimoto radiator

I just installed a mishimoto in my 4th gen this past weekend I tried using oem fans but the main fan hit the front motor mount and broke the fan so I'm currently researching the slim fans but I'm not liking the whole zip tie things through th radiator.

its not that hard to make your own fan shroud kit, just get some thin metal plate and cut the holes for the slim fans there...

Re: mishimoto radiator

I have been looking into the mishimoto as well but understand they don't make it for the auto. Other than the mod to the mounts, did you have any other problems? Did the original fans mount right on?

Thanks

Rice

Re: mishimoto radiator

yeah I reinstalled the original fans/shrouds for now because this wasn't a planed upgrade so I didn't have the extra $180ish for the shroud, but I do plan on getting it, I'm also going to get new hoses and thermostat to match, I’m at 108k miles so I’m also planning a water pump timing belt change in the next couple of months and that will complete the overhaul of the entire cooling system.

hey. I also have a 00 sh and was wondering if the oem shround fans fits with the mishimoto radiators when installing. Do they hit the header when installed? Does it fit nicely? Is there enough space?

Re: mishimoto radiator

Sorry guys, kinda fell off the map. so yes I have an SH so I needed a transmission oil cooler I didn't go Mishimoto I went with this:

Compressor Works/Transmission Oil Cooler 911404 at AutoZone.com

It was like $40 when I got it, which was almost a third of Mishimoto and it has a better cooling capability with it's extra loop giving it 6 passes through the fins not just 4.

Been using it for 3 years now 0 problems (can't believe it's been three years lol)

Thanks for the post! You should have no problems fitting the OEM fans with the Mishimoto radiator.

Thanks!

The fitment is close. Even using a fan shroud and fans - the clearance to adjust the alternator to change a simple belt makes it a pain.

Pat, I have a car sitting here with one of Mishimoto's radiators, and it's had a pinhole leak since day 1. The car belongs to a very good friend of mine but he never wanted to be bothered about it due to where he lives.

I happen to be 15 minutes from you, think there's anything that we can work out with this? I also have a not so normal 5th myself if any new products need testing (TST is not as active as it were in years past so i'm taking advantage of you stumbling across this forum)

How does the installation of the transmission cooler from atts to radiator work? Will it be easy to see if I just start working on it?
