Icon5 Intereting Question?

For awhile now i haven't been able to figure out what's wrong with my 5th Gen. Once it gets to operating temp for awile it sputters out and dies. i replaced the distributer, Cap, rotor, and Map sensor with no luck. I was thinking it might be a malfunction with the coolant temp sensor. Maybe once the car gets hot the sensor isn't reading right and floods the engine out. let it sit for about a half hour and i can drive it for a minute or two ill it happens again. Also about 2 weeks before this happened it started taking a few seconds to start the car. usually started right away bt then took about 3 seconds after about 2 weeks. Any help?

Some of you may remember my old thread and i think i figured out the problem with this fix but not sure.-- Lude Stops Running --

My chilton's book says that if this malfunction then it can cause the car to run rich and stalls out and sputter. This would explained the back firing when trying to start the car after it dies and the increased black soot on the back of the car.

Re: Intereting Question?

Just to cover some basics. is there oil in your coolant/vise versa?

Any way to test and find your A/F when the car is running for the short time?

Any cel's?

main relay issue? sparkplugs/ wires in good shape? cap/rotor?

Is your battery in good shape? clean terminals?

There's a lot to test unfortunately

edit**

Ok so you've;

changed map sensor
distributor
fuel filter
fuel pressure is OK
cleaned cap & rotor
ignition recall was done a few years ago

Re: Intereting Question?

I got a CEL for Cylinder position sensor noise, top dead center sensor noise, and the crank angle position sensor or whichever one it is in the distributor. Clean terminals. battery is great, wires are okay and new plugs. no coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant. and no i don't have a way of seeing the mix. i don't think it's the main relay because when it dies the lights all stay on and just the engine stops.

I think it's been running rich because i got a bunch of black soot on the back of the car.

Re: Intereting Question?

I know it was mentioned before, but did you ever check to see if your timing belt skipped a tooth or anything?

Although swapping out the distributor once already, it's possible you got a bad one.

Also wonder if your crank sensor is bad... located on the bottom of the timing belt side.

Never heard of a top dead center sensor noise code...

The main relay can cause the car to just randomly stop running. All power will remain on but motor will cut out.

Re: Intereting Question?

If the crankshaft sensor is bad would that let it run for a little while and then stall out and die? i thought if that was the problem then it would happen all the time. from my understanding the cylinder position sensor and top dead center sensor are connected together and go to the same plug. could one be bad and mess up the other one? the actual code is Top dead center sensor intermittent interruption and cylinder position sensor intermittent interruption.

Re: Intereting Question?

If the crank position sensor is say torn somewhere - as the engine heats up and wires move due to vibrations or oil leaking etc - it's possible for it to start cutting out. Just like the main relay, it'll just cut the motor off if not working properly. But that would be one of the last things i'd ever mess with due to the difficulty of getting to it...

You should try swapping distributors again, first. Like I said, it's possible you got a bad one. Also check your harness for any rips in that area.

Re: Intereting Question?

Well i would but i don't currently have my car. My dad didn't want me to keep throwing parts at it so we took it to the shop. They replaced the distributor, cap, and rotor and it still has this problem so their trying to fix it. i don't know why but i'm stuck on the temp sensor. if it's bad it can cause hard starting and stalling after warmed up due to flooding the engine. think i should call the shop and have them check it?

Re: Intereting Question?

We have replaced a few of them in the past couple years on accords for the same type of problem. Worth a shot and fairly cheap too.

Re: Intereting Question?

I think that's what i'm going to try because after all a Prelude is based alot off of the accord.

Re: Intereting Question?

You may want to check the IAC valve or EGR. I have heard that a sticking EGR can cause an engine to die once warm. Also, when cold, the IAC lets in extra air but is supposed to close down more when the engine warms up. A dirty one may be allowing more air and in turn thinning out the mixture to the point that the engine stalls.

Re: Intereting Question?

I cleaned the IAC valve but the EGR interests me. i can almost guarantee that it's never been cleaned or looked at. maybe i'll pull it off and take a look at it. i'm calling the garage tomorrow to see if there is any progress on the car and if not i'm telling the guy to replace the temp sensor.

Re: Intereting Question?

Went to go pick the car up today. he said he put a new coil on it and he thinks that was the problem. Let it idle for 20 mins in their parking lot and hopped into it to drive it and made it about 100yards from the shop. car started to sputter. put it into reverse and floored it back up the hill and told him to check the temp sensor and not to call me until he knew it was fixed. WTF???
