Another crank pulley thread

Hey, Hate to ask when there is other threads similar but I really need some advice.

I had a bad crank pulley recently and as I didn't have a pulley holder I took it somewhere to get repaired, they were totally dodgy and I found 5 errors after looking over the car...it came back with a wobbly crank pulley and a slight whine like the accessory belts were too tight. Anyway the crank pulley made some noise the other night again so I instantly turned the car off and checked everything out. The crank pulley bolt was hand tight!

So I took the pulley off last night to investigate to find a damaged pulley and keyway, both about a month old. I was scared my crank nose would be damaged but I measured it and it appeared to be 30mm.

So heres to my question 2 bad crank pulleys does this mean something else is triggering it or is it purely bad luck? the first time the bolt was jammed in and wouldn't turn but the pulley didn't seem to have wobble (definitely didn't before the pulley went bad) then the shop that "fixed" it gave it back with wobble...all I can see after pulling the crank pulley off is that the keyway looks a bit older than the other parts and maybe that wasn't replaced even though they charged me or the bolt not being tight enough causing it to wobble...was also no evidence of loctite.

The shop tried to claim it was past mechanics not adjusting the balancer belt but the car idled fine and drove fine both times its been fixed, the belts seem to be adjusted right under the cover with a quick look. And I can't simply take it back because the shop is being extremely difficult about the situation and forcing me to seek legal action.

I just don't want it to be a re-occuring thing, I'm really hoping its not being caused from the crank nose being damaged as the motor itself is so healthy with low kms.

thanks.

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Do you have access to air tools? I'd buy a new crank pulley and key and put it on yourself. It's super easy to do, and at least this time you'd know all new parts were put on instead of taking it back to the shop and something messing up again

Re: Another crank pulley thread

How does the keyway ON the crank look? In good condition, or chewed up?

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Keyway on crank looks perfect, only thing I'm worried about is if it's gotten smaller.

Yeah I'm thinking of doing it myself as its all ready to be put on I just don't know If I'd be able to pursue the shop for the money if I did repairs myself.

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Well it sounds like the crank is in good condition, which is good news. Sounds like a combo b/w bad luck, and a shotty shop/mechanic.

I agree with doin it yourself (if you have access to tools), its very easy to do. I'd buy a new pulley, key, and loc-tite, make sure its torqued down to 180ft-lbs, and you'll be good

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Thanks for the reply! so there is no way the diameter is out by a .05 mm? everything did measure up and I'm just paranoid.

Looks like the mechanic may of re-used the keyway, it looks really old and rough and he charged me for a new one.

I think its going to Honda as I want to pursue this shop for their negligence, it came back with a wobbly pulley so I really hope it was a bad keyway and that when I get it back it is straight again because I really had high hopes for taking this car to the track :(

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Looks worse in the pic but it has no real bad marks on the keyway other than that tiny bit at the end.

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Not gonna lie, the keyway on the crank looks pretty chewed up, which would def cause the wobbling.

Does your camera have a macro setting where you could zoom in on the keyway?

Re: Another crank pulley thread

It's only really like that at the very end and its barely chewed up it just looks in the photo. isn't the keyway halfway in that anyway? its literally only the first 1-2mm

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Yea the KEY sits halfway in each keyWAY, one in the pulley and one in the crank.

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Im considering doing the repairs myself, buying a pulley holder and maybe putting jb weld in that end bit that is slightly off and doing the bolt up with a non-permanent loctite atleast that way If I have the tool I can keep checking the bolt tightness every other week.

If you insist that the keyway on the crank is ONLY messed up for like the first 1cm, I highly highly doubt that's your prob, your crank should be fine.

Re: Another crank pulley thread

Ok this is pretty interesting...pretty sure I know why it went bad again now and hopefully can get the mechanics for it.

thats my "new" keyway that they apparently changed with oem keyway as they couldn't get parts anywhere else.

this is comparison of oem vs the old one on the net

So looks like an old keyway caused the issue, no way metal could look that tarnished after a month...not only that the price they charged me for it was 50% different compared to honda prices I was quoted and all the other parts are similar prices to what honda charged.

Re: Another crank pulley thread

need some more opinions, ofc the shop says they installed the keyway as new, does anyone think I have a case?

Like would it be possible to metal to corrode and look 15 years old within 4 weeks lol, I understand the keyway is damaged from the pulley coming undone but surely some of it would still have some evidence of new metal on certain parts and not look old as ****.
