Icon9 My prelude is sick

Ok so I want to see if anyone could give me a clue as to whats going on with my Prelude. First of all, I got her about 6 months ago. This car wasn't maintained very well at all and was leaking oil when got I her home. I knew she had high mileage (100+) but I didn't/don't know the exact number because the Odometer was/is still broken.. anyways, as time went by I had the tranny replaced, timing belt, water pump, Erg valve replaced and all the ports cleaned, and a recent valve adjustment.

Now for the symptoms...

Pretty much whenever I go for a long drive (ie 45 min +) I'll start to hear a clicking noise coming from the engine as if something is loose. It sounds like valves almost.. and I can really smell the engine, not sure if its oil being burned because oil levels have been consistent ever since I had the tranny done. Oh and also.. when Im sitting at a light the car starts to vibrate pretty rough, almost pulsing and it starts to idle low.. the oil light actually pulsates on and off along with the engine when ever this happens. Aside from all this the engine is still beastly and the car take off like a bat out of hell.

Again, this happens only after a long drive (which is almost every morning since I live 40 min away from school) and the engine has gotten really hot. If you have any suggestions as to what could be the culprit or what else I could try in order to find a solution please feel free to chime in :/

Your car still have a heat shield, these H's run hot? Might want to try a higher grade of oil, Ive been using 10w30 for the last 2 years or maybe try some Lucas I hear that lubes everything up pretty good. That noise might just be a sticky valve.

Ouch, oil light on = you're hurting your engine. Stop and fix it before it blows. Must be head related since you had it repair. there is alot of little vtec oil hole that need cleaning when doing head job. make sure its clean

Sorry to hear about your girl being sick..

You say the engine's overheating (i.e. temp gauge rises)? What's good with the coolant? When you say you smell the engine, might it be the coolant (do you know what it smells like?)

The head isn't too bad but iv never really thought about doing a thorough cleaning, thats going to be next because i really dont want any more damage than what may have happened already. What can i use to clean it?

Its not really overheating but the smell im referring to smells a little bit like hot oil, i added some Lucas to it today and i noticed the engine was running smoother and i didnt hear the noise i was talking about. I dont think this solved the issue but helped with the symptoms a little bit.

Advanced search function, my friend.

EDIT: regarding cleaning the head.. or any other question you might have.. 99% of the time, someone's made a thread and it's been solved (or at least tried to get solved) haha

Re: My prelude is sick

If you can smell burnt oil, try and locate where it is leaking from. My guess is a bad seal somewhere, especially the intake cam seal.

Re: My prelude is sick

and the distributor o-ring, right in front of the cam seal. There are a bunch of seals on your timing belt side as well, they are hidden, but problematic on ludes that have been abused..

If this solves the problem ill be sure to post it up here. What are some of these seals on the timing belt side?sorry if its a dumb question but Iv yet to explore that side...

The main ones that would leak are the cam seals and crankshaft seal. You need to remove the valve cover to check the cam seals. Crankshaft seal you basically need to remove all timing covers, which would entail removing the crank pulley. If you have a bright enough flashlight, you may be able to see down and around the head mount.

Re: My prelude is sick

pull your plugs and see if their oily on top, when our engines over heat a few times (or maybe even once) the spark plug well seals can get brittle, there are upper and lower spark plug well seals. You'll see the uppers when u pull your VC off, the lowers are a bit more intensive to get at.
Silly question but, you got a torque wrench right ?
